I have around 50 Handel albums (That’s George Frederic Handel, 1685-1759) but Plex has them all listed with “Handheld” as the artist when I have them ALL with Handel as the Artist. This is crazy. I have Local Media Assets on top and under last.fm I have Local Media Assets (Albums) on top. What am I doing wrong? Clicking on Update Metadata fixes other problems, but not that one. In ALL those albums I have the Artist as Handel. Where did Handheld come from?
First of all, Handel is the composer, not the artist. The artist I the person or group performing the music.
It has to be getting bad info somewhere. Are you fully configured to use embedded tags?
Can you provide a screenshot of the album tags from mp3tag, or whatever tagging app you use?
First to Lady Fitzgerald, I have Handel in Composer, Artist and Album Artist. This takes care of all display devices, such as my car and Sonos (which allows Composer display as well as Folder-the latter is fine by me).
But it doesn’t, apparently, take care of Plex. Attached is a screenshot from Mp3tag for Handel’s opera Ariodante.
Thanks beckfield. I have seen that post from your good self before. My last.fm looks different so I’ve added a screenshot.
I haven’t done the “plex dance”? Since I use Plex only for music–nothing else–my reading of your post is that I shouldn’t have to dance!

If you changed the metadata tags after Plex scanned the files, you will have to do the Plex Dance (True, you shouldn’t have to ever do the dance, but Plex is notorious for not refreshing metadata when it’s supposed to). The need for the Dance definitely does apply to Music libraries.
Try doing the Dance with a single album first, to see if it works. That “Handheld” tag has to be coming from somewhere. Plex doesn’t just stick stuff in without a source.
Thanks beckfield. Looking more closely to the links within your plex dance explanation I can’t see how to force an immediate bundle clean and I can’t see how to do the dance for a single album but my scheduled tasks are set to run from midnight to 6am and I have a tick in all of the Scheduled Tasks boxes–I’ll just have to remember to leave my computer turned on at night for a while.
My naming schema is fine–I always use Mp3tag to fix the names every time I rip or download an album.
So…I’m happy to wait a week. Alternatively, could I simply remove all my music and then add it back - and perhaps delete and re-install Plex? Would that work?
Here’s where you find “Clean Bundles,” and just for reference in the Plex Dance, ‘Update Library’ has been renamed.
Removing the music and adding it back is essentially the “Dance.” Cleaning bundles just ensures that Plex doesn’t leave any garbage behind that might hamper it when adding the music back.
If the Plex Dance is needed, your scheduled tasks won’t do any good.
To do the Plex Dance for a single album, do the following:
- Using your operating system’s file manager, move the folder containing one of your Handel albums out of its current location, to a place where Plex won’t look for it (anyplace not specified in the Library’s ‘Add Folders’ settings). I find the Desktop convenient.
- update library. ( ‘Scan Library Files’ ) (This will result in the Handel album disappearing from your Library)
- empty trash. (on the same menu in the screenshot above)
- clean bundles.
- Using your operating system’s file manager, move the folder that you moved in step one back to its original location.
- update library (‘Scan Library Files’) again. This will restore the album in your Library, hopefully with correct tags.
If the steps above solve the issue for one album, you can repeat the process for the other albums. You can move all of the remaining Handel albums at once if you’re comfortable with it.
Thanks - I’ll give it a go - might take me a day or two. All I would need to do to execute your Point 6 would be to rename my root “Music” folder under which all my 64 GB of music lives.
(Hey…where are you BTW - I’m in Brisbane, AU.)
Oh boy! This is super super frustrating. First I wanted to see where, in Plex, it shows the name/path to my media library on my hard disk. I wanted to do this because your Point 1 says to move a folder: “(anyplace not specified in the Library’s ‘Add Folders’ settings)” Well, my Add Folders doesn’t show any “place” that i can see. Thinking back, I added my top-level Music folder by dragging it into a Plex window, not by browsing for a folder.
Looking at https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200289266-Editing-Libraries I don’t see an Add Folders heading on the left. All I get is this:
Maybe I’ll try your steps moving the folder somewhere that I absolutely know Plex can’t find it.
A thought…is it because I haven’t paid for “Premium” that I don’t see the Add Folder?
I don’t have a clue why the Add Folders tab is missing. I’ve never heard of that happening. It’s certainly not because you aren’t Premium.
What version of Plex is this? What OS are you on? I’ve never heard of dragging a folder into a Plex window to create a library, either.
What do you see if you add a new library, the traditional way? Is ‘Add Folders’ there now?
It worked! I dd your “one album” recommendation with Handel’s opera Ariodante which now has Handel as the “artist” (well, composer) whereas it used to have Handheld (who the f**k).
Thanks heaps. Plex clearly leaves those who know what they want with metadata, classical freaks in particular but there’s not much in the way of alternatives.
BTW, what’s the difference between “Personal Media” and “Local Media Assets”? Phrases more obscure have yet to be devined.

I did the remaining steps of your instructions (renamed my root music directory, updated, did the trash then the bundles thing), then reverted to the original root directory name and went to add a library as per your last detail. I hit the + sign, added library, told it to arrange by name rather than newest, then hit Next expecting to be asked for the path to the music, but instead I got a blank grey screen with, in the middle, a note saying something cute like “Hold tight while we look for your music”. It’s now real busy!
As the albums load I notice that all the Handel albums are indeed Handel and not Handheld so I think I’ve got it licked.
Good night! I’ll come back in the morning and check!
And finally, now that the whole dancing around business is done, I have most of my 633 albums correctly listed in Plex. For those that aren’t correct, for example some are missing or have incorrect album art, a bit of sleuthing reveals a mis-labeling somewhere.
But mysteries still remain. Why, Under “Edit Library”, don’t I see an “Add Folders” tab on the left (see above), as Plex’s own instructions show (see https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200289266-Editing-Libraries)? During my “Plex Dance” routine I re-named my head Music album to MusicOld, then after re-scanning etc I changed it back…even then there was no way to add the music back by folder…Plex simply said “wait while we find your music” (or somesuch) and found it.
Should I ever have another folder of music to add I have no idea how that will happen. Perhaps Plex has gone to drag-and-drop as the only way to add a folder. An explanation from Plex would be great.
I’m completely flummoxed on the missing ‘Add Folders’ tab in the Edit screen. @OttoKerner @ChuckPA @BigWheel Do you guys have any ideas?

Which web browser ís used?
Is the web browser display ‘scaled’? (Try pressing CTRL+0)
Was the library imported from iTunes? In which case I have no further knowledge because I avoid this software like the plague.
