Why does the Plex TV app take so long to load

So as per the title it takes Plex Tv app on a Samsung series 7 about 5-10 mins to load. Sometimes longer. I’ve noticed it loads quicker if you click on an episode from the TV app but again it takes minutes.

The TV is on a permanent internet connection and I do have the HTPC connected to it but the TV app for series is just convenient. Or it was.

Any ideas?

Thx in advance. :+1:t2:

to load what? the app itself, navigating through screens or start playback or all of the above.

maybe the app on TV does not know it is on same network as server and maybe accessing it like remote. 5-10 min is an awfully long time even for that though. if you can get something started playing look at your server Now Playing Dashboard were it should say if it is playing locally or remotely to at least rule that out.

I have a Samsung 65 inch ua65k in Australia… It is having exactly the same issue. Five minutes plus to get past the Plex opening screen to a listing of what programs I have available. Prior to the recent update I did not have this issue. The TV is a live Internet connection directtly to the router through a splitter box.
Once the connection is made Plex works as good as ever. It is just the connection time that is frustrating. I have the latest edition of the Media Server installed and Windows 10 V2004 on my PC. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I have the same issue on my 2016 SUHD Smart TV 65inch KS950D. IIRC, the problem began several months ago after the samsung Plex app was updated. Of course, I could be wrong, but the issue remains regardless of time being correct.

The TV has the latest firmware. I’m using the latest Plex software for the computer/server. The TV is wired directly to my router via CAT6 cable.

Just to be clear, it’s the time it takes for the Plex app to load on the TV (5-10 minutes). After it finally allows me to input my pin, the app works as it should. I agree with a previous statement about clicking an episode that is displayed in order for the Plex app to load more quickly. However, this isn’t 100% true.

Can I ask what your internet connection speeds are so I can add to report. I assume they are plenty fast for it but just want to specify for report.

Guys, not much help but no problem here! Working fine, takes about 30 seconds which seems slow but nowhere near what your experiencing (2017 49inch Samsung latest updates) it maybe a silly question but have you uninstalled the app and reinstalled? (Sorry for the obvious but I can’t see that stated)
Good luck…

I’m on a fibre optic connection. 500mbs. The tv is connected to a splitter box from the router but the load time is the same whether it’s wired or wireless.

I’m still having the same problem with load times. It simply sits on the PLEX logo when started. Sometimes absolutely nothing happens and I turn off the TV or try loading a different app form the Samsung TV menu. Then back to the Plex app.

Even the missus keeps asking what’s happening when it sits there on the logo screen.

Is a fix due?

Yep. I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled. Logged out and signed back in etc. Makes no difference.

Trying changing your TV DNS to 1.1.1.1, it’s far faster response times than all ISP provided. This setting is found in the TV Network settings/ Manually configure.

I’ve managed to find that setting and changed it. I’ll report back so others will know if it works.

And thank you. :+1:t2:

Yep. Works perfectly. Less than 10-15 secs load time.

Thank you again.

For anyone else going to change your DNS settings, I could only find it from the TV home menu, scrolling to settings but then scrolling along to connected network. Simply going to the Network from settings, couldn’t find it.

It works. Do it. :+1:t2:

In the UK . Exact same issue only on Samsung TV all other devices fine. Not changing DNS as I do t want my TV querying internet with my house network details. Most definitely an app issue only just started to happen. I totally reset tb and app made no difference

other apps don’t load from the internet. (Not sure if you mean other smart TV brands)

not sure what you mean by this. You can change DNS on your router as well.

Can you turn on logging in the app then restart the app then grab server logs. I not sure it will have everything but might have some info on app loading.

With exception of Samsung TV with Plex not working correctly all others apps work on TV work fine, Plex on other devices works fine. I’m not changing my setup to work around one app on one manufacturers device. I use cloudflare DNS yuck to internet provider DNS. Thanks for asking appreciated

1.1.1.1 which was suggested above is Cloudfare https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.1/ . Do they have some other publicly available one or are you using some enterprise solution of their’s?

if you can enable logging we can see if that tells us anything when app launches

I am having the same issue on my Samsung KS8000. If I start up netflix, play something, and then go back to plex, sometimes it starts up. I will see if I can enable logging. Please help!

I have verified this is only with the samsung tv app. When I use my ps5 or plex elsewhere, there is no lag. It starts right away.

I have the same problem since the recent updates. Used to work fine. Nothing related to my internet or wifi as used to work great for years. I also stream 4K easily with netflix and others

Its just the loading. Once i can select user/profile its no issue

What i do to solve it is load the app from launchbar. There it stays on PLEX for a long time i then press the back button and keep it pressed. This kills the app i believe
Then launch the app again and then goes much faster.
So i think issue has something to do with resuming or restarting the app after it has been used before (even after shutting down tv and all)

Strange but annoying. Kids dont have the patience and typically say plex is not working anymore :joy::joy:

Thank you very much!!! I had no idea you could restart an app that way!! I thought you had to hold down the power button for a while (till the samsung uhd logo shows) to turn off the TV and reset ALL the apps. Restarting the app works for me! That is wayyy less annoying than restarting the whole tv! Haha. I appreciate the help!
