It’s not me so much, but these old people I share with. I put the stuff on there, so I can probably find something. There’s nothing on here I wouldn’t watch. Even the bad is so bad it’s good - otherwise it wouldn’t be here.
When the library of movies is 7000 strong my friends are standing around like Deer caught in the headlights. A good random selection of unwatched or new items would be great.
I’ll probably have to compromise.
It may work for them, but it’s sure to annoy me…lol
More with Bruce Willis showed up.
Was replaced by a Director I never heard of.
Then Bruce Showed up again.
Plex and Random are words that should never be used in the same sentence.
Plex’s Random Engine is Blind, Crippled and Crazy.
(it also likes Bruce Willis movies - apparently)
I was playing with Smart Collections and I don’t see a way to pull a random set of results let alone regenerate the random results. I think that’s gotta be built in programatically.
I really liked the idea of just displaying 5 recently released unwatched movies out of the last 50 but couldn’t find a way to make that happen with the filters. Sometimes having a limited selection offered makes it easier to pick something to watch.
For now, I’m pretty happy with my “Unwatched Recently Released” row instead of the built in Recently Released, but I think having some more “Manage Library” options for hubs\rows would be nice to have available.
Plex still pushin’ Old Baldy.
…and The Fifth Element or Twelve Monkeys (you know, the good ones) isn’t even among them. I have 57 Movies wherein Brucie appears, but Plex has that dozen in it’s teeth and can’t let go - Sad Face.
The “Top Movies …” carousels both include only Unplayed movies. Watched movies drop off the list.
“Top Movies in (Genre)” is sorted alphabetically by Title. That seems like a bug.
“Top Movies by (Actor or Director)” is sorted by Critic Rating. That’s why those twelve Bruce Willis movies stay static.
The randomly chosen (Genre) and (Actor or Director) change periodically. I know that restarting the server forces a change. I’m not sure what the time interval is. I have the impression that watching a movie from the carousel also makes it draw a new one - after a Refresh - but that seems odd.
I’m curious how the “random” selection works. Does it prefer Actors and Directors with the most media?
for anyone that wants to be a bit adventurous
take a look a look at Plex-Metadata-Manager*
you can take trakt, & themoviedb trending lists and generate Smart Collections, that when viewed, will randomly sort the results each time you view it.
You can apply this randomness to just about any type of collections
For example
templates:
Chart:
sort_title: +1_<<num>><<collection_name>>
sync_mode: sync
smart_label: random
collections:
Trending:
template: { name: Chart, num: 2 }
trakt_trending: 75
tmdb_trending_daily: 75
tmdb_trending_weekly: 75
summary: Movies Trending across the internet
file_poster: config/assets/Trends/Trending.png
Each time this collection loads it loads fresh content. This Smart Collection can be added to a home hub.
This might help out the folks who want some bubbling up of content on the Home Screen for quick selection though I didn’t test it there yet.
I’m guessing the bug with user vs admin on “unwatched” status function in smart collections is still an issue but … it’s something with random option available now.
Tested on Home Screen… the display of “random” movies doesn’t change on the Home Screen until you leave Plex and come back but the contents if you click into it are random. It’s definitely random in the library view too - just the home hub isn’t dynamically updating as random.
Edit: Leaving and coming back doesn’t refresh it - more like once the session ends it refreshes.
The random is VERY random meaning a smart collection based on this is always changing every time so having it be semi static actually wouldn’t be bad so people can browse the presented random content before it disappears.
