Why don’t versions actually work

Server Version#: 1.41.4.9463
Player Version#: 4.145.1

Are versions basically a useless feature in Plex? It seems the server could care less about how many different versions I have at different resolutions and bitrates, seems to only work based on codec compatibility?

I can’t think of any reason one would store say an 264 and 265 of the same resolution and bitrate, that just wastes space, the 265 would exist for space savings and having a dupe in 264 negates that entire point and then it seems odd to waste space having a 265?

Imho the point of having versions is for the different bitrates/resolution.

Am I missing something?

Please tell me it’s cuz I’m doing it wrong.

To be clear what I’m saying is why does Plex transcode the highest bitrate no matter how many versions I have at different bitrates if a client app sets a max bitrate.

is this for streaming or downloading. if its for downloading thats weird i never have issues there but if its for streaming thats never worked for me when i set a bitrate so i either download the desired version beforehand or just stream original

For streaming.

Ya I think it just is what it is here for streaming.
