Why is an Internect connection required to scan a library?

… and how can I post this if I don’t have an Internet connection?

Yes. Even as I write this, I cannot scan a library because I am getting an error message that I do not have an Internet connection. Clearly, I do have an Internet connection, or I would not be able to post this. Am I right?

More importantly, why can I not use my Plex system without going out of my local network? It seems like something is broken out there somewhere, because everything is working fine here. I really do not like not being able to do something just because something way beyond my control is not working as it should.

Why is an Internet connection required to scan a library?

  • Because during a scan, it checks against TheMovieDB and TheTVDB (Depending on the library) to acquire metadata for your episodes and movies

Clearly, I do have an Internet connection, or I would not be able to post this. Am I right?

  • Yes, you do have an internet connection, but plex apparently does not. I would check firewalls (windows or otherwise) and allow the Plex App access to the internet

why can I not use my Plex system without going out of my local network?

  • Short answer: Because plex authenticates the users for your server via plex.tv
  • Long answer: You can, it just takes some fiddling, search the forums for “Plex while offline” or something similar and you will get your answer on how to use it to at least watch your content AFTER you have completed scanning and adding media in.

Thank you, Jason.

The only thing that isn’t working for me is the library scan, which, of course, is the only way to add media. I can watch movies and listen to music that I already have loaded. The library scan just suddenly and inexplicably stopped working. No settings were changed. My systems are not the problem. I see in other threads that some centralized service is in a failed state, even thought the error message points to me as the problem. So I guess I just need to wait until that is fixed.

I understand that Plex checks various databases, but the scan I’m trying to do is for a music library that is set to prefer local data. It doesn’t need any other data. It has been 10 hours since I posted and it’s still not working.

What happened to degrading gracefully? The programming could at least load the new data in a minimal manner. I don’t need an artist biography to listen to music. That’s the frustration. In this case, Plex does not improve on the old-fashioned method of putting a CD in the drive and pushing the “Play” button.

It just seems to me that I should be able to continue using my systems even if my Internet connection were unplugged.

I am having the same issue but ONLY with adding Music. Adding Movies works as it always has, I only noticed this last night. As far as I know nothing has changed.

Jim!

Some server logs could help us diagnose what’s going wrong.

Apparently, the problem is not on the user side, so there’s nothing we can do.

I have been having the same problem. Music library failed to scan … “need an internect connection.” It started happening yesterday at pretty much the exact same time that plex.tv went down. I suspect it’s not a coincidence.

Even though plex.tv is back up now, the Music scan problem still persisted this morning. I just restarted my Plex server, and now I can scan again just fine.

tl;dr - Try restarting your server.

Okay. I will do so. Thanks.

Yep, that seems to have fixed it. I didn’t realise that plex.tv had gone down. Last night I restarted plex and even rebooted server to no avail, plex.tv was obviously in still some state of flux when I was trying then. Appears to be all OK now :relaxed:

Stopping and restarting the server fixed the problem for me.

I am having this problem again. The last time, rebooting the computer solved the problem. I don’t want to reboot right now, so, is there a way to restart the Plex server on a Windows 10 computer without rebooting the whole machine?

right click the system tray icon and select ‘Exit’.

count to 15

then open Plex Media Server from the start menu.

Thanks!
