Why is my content buffering?

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6106
Player Version#: LG TV player, version unknown

Wifi speed test on my LG TV is >100Mbps. Measured at my iPhone it’s even higher.

So why is content that reports to be 26Mbps bitrate buffering badly? Hoe do I find the source of the issue?

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? Is the stream actually „local“ (not remote or indirect)? Any transcoding going on that might be too much for your server?

Good call…It said I was transcoding both video and audio. I changed the setting for that file to “allow direct play” and “allow Direct Streaming” (not sure what the difference is between them) and it is playing much better.

Not sure why it was transcoding however…

Thanks for that…it discussed both direct play and direct streaming, but but it didn’t differentiate between them.

  • direct play → file is streamed as is: container, video, audio, subtitle streams are served as-is
  • direct stream → file is remuxed for streaming: container is adjusted on-the-fly to a compatible format while video, audio, subtitle streams are served as-is.

so… if your Plex app is on a client that cannot deal with WMV files but the embedded video/audio/subtitle streams are fully compatible, Plex might be placing the video/audio/subtitle streams into a new container. There’s no transcoding involved… just a “change of envelope”.

Convoluted much?

Thanks!!

Well it’s still buffering but only three times in a 1-hr episode versus the every 2 minutes it was before.

My original question still stands…why is a file whose Plex-defined bitrate is well below the existing bandwidth buffering?
