Why is my library showing multiple entires for the same movie file?

This started a few weeks ago.
Two entries for most movie files. Even when I look for the location, it shows the same location of the movie file, but shows twice in the library.

Because there is a relatively new feature called ā€œCollectionsā€, which will aggregate your movie titles into fewer icons. For example all of your Ace Ventura movies would end up in one Ace Ventura collection. Unfortunately, the collections are always displayed, even when you have selected Movies as your viewing mode. It drives me nuts, too. If you don’t mind the aggregated view, then in the top right choose Collections instead of Movies or Folders.

To be clear, this is a bug, and I’ve run out of energy to complain about all the problems in Plex. If the Plex team gives enough of a rip about it, they might fix it in 20 years.

It is not a bug and it can be switched off:

It’s a bug when you choose a certain view and it doesn’t show the correct information on the screen. Turning off a feature because of how the UI looks when not using that feature is not a solution - it’s a bug. If I’m NOT viewing Collections, the screen should NOT show collections.

That is a feature.
And turning it off doesn’t mean it is turning off Collections as such.
It is merely turning off the display of collections showing up ā€˜inline’ the library.
This particular behaviour (showing collections ā€˜inline’) was one of the most requested features.
It has been implemented now.
If you don’t like it, disable it. Collections will continue to work - no matter the setting.

Well,
The Collections feature have a lot of bugs.
1.Making collections of movies that don’t have any other movie related.
2. If you delete the collection and maybe is ok, but you don’t have the other/s movie/s at this moment you can’t recreate the collection. The solution is take off the files of the library and change the folder.
3. You can’t create collections that in fact exist on blu-ray.com or imdb.com or especial collections of other countries outside USA that are not in that ā€œofficial placesā€.
4. You have to go to blu-ray.com to get the cover art (or whatever site you like) I use bluray.com when the copy that I have comes from the original blu-ray (BTW the sizes of the blu.ray covers doesn’t fit)
5. You need to googleit in the web the background for put some background in the collection

IF the collections going to stay, the need to works harder to fix this and nother minor problems.

For me, the way to show the collections is a disaster. When you call the option ā€œall moviesā€ the collections comes in between the movies, and don’t respect the order, What I mean is if whatever collection is in the library the first one needs be the collection item and then the movies in order. Right now the movies appears whatever they are named.

Without need to choice is you want to see only movies or only collections, the collections can be showed up or down the list of all movies library. Not messed in between.

Thank you

The feature doesn’t create collections itself.
Either it reads them from your files (ā€˜Album’ metatag in an mp4 file)
or it downloads them from TheMovieDatabase (which can be disabled).

  1. If you delete the collection and maybe is ok, but you don’t have the other/s movie/s at this moment you can’t recreate the collection.

???
Of course you can recreate the collection. What makes you think you cannot do so?

  1. You can’t create collections that in fact exist on blu-ray.com or imdb.com or especial collections of other countries outside USA that are not in that ā€œofficial placesā€.

Now I am puzzled. What are you saying here?
Since you can create collections manually, you can create collections at your will. It has nothing to do with official vs. inofficial or anything.

  1. You have to go to blu-ray.com to get the cover art (or whatever site you like) I use bluray.com when the copya that I have comes from the original blu-ray
  2. You need to google in the web the background for put some in the collection

That is not a bug, that it a missing feature.

Right now the movies appears whatever they are named.

You can edit each coillection and change the order of its items from ā€˜by Title’ to ā€˜by Release date’

Without need to choice is you want to see only movies or only collections the collections can be showed up or down the list of all movies library. Not messed in between.

You can edit your library and decide whether you want collections to appear in your normal movie list or not.
If you disable collections showing up ā€˜inline’, you can still switch to a ā€˜collections-only’ view mode, which shows only your collections.

see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/

I really appreciate your time, some thougts are clear now. Thank you.

However.

How i see all this thing, the inline feature is the cause of that mess.

The APP need to add the option to sort ā€œby collection nameā€ or something… and keep the rest untouched.

Ex. If I have my movies sorted by name and the collections active, the logical is that the main collection appears first and then the movies of that collections in order, without afecting the order of the other movies that don’t have collection. There’s no option to sort the movies to this happends. That’s why I’m suggesting assign a space for the collection on the top or in the footer of the ā€œall moviesā€ option.

BTW using ā€œsort by nameā€ option and apply the filter to ā€œTheā€ has no sense.

The sort of the movies like: The Silence of the Lambs it sorted using ā€œLā€ not ā€œTheā€ (Silence of the Lambs, The) Sorry but is not used even in the web sites to indexing the content.

I know how fix that ā€œshort situationā€ but needs to do one by one and I can not do that with around 3000 movies.
_ I don’t work for the APP, i need that the APP work for me._

Again, thank you.

Cheers

Did you read the linked article, in full?

All, thanks for the quick answers. I understand the usefulness of Collections, but disabling them seemed to work for now.

Thanks again!

Disabling collections worked for me. I would also second that, if a ā€œfeatureā€ it is, it’s not implemented well. For example, I have 1 file for the movie Bambi, but it was being displayed 3 times; that’s just annoying

I have to agree with the other Plex Pass users, when this feature was added my movie list on my Xbox started showing two versions of every movie. One that was the title that I had been setting up when named the file. The second listing was original Metadata title from the blueray/dvd (example as above with all caps and underscores for space). I read the article and tried all three settings. When I picked the ā€œHide items which are in collectionsā€ I only saw the ugly metadata movie names. The only option removed the duplicates and left the preferred movie name (with all menu options available on the three dot (…) menu was to disable Collections.
