Can anyone explain why Plex would insist on transcoding AC3 5.1 audio to Opus when downloading to an Andriod tablet or iPad, when the exact same devices can direct play the exact same file without issue?
I have three versions of the same movie.
Example Movie Title - 2160p.mkv
Example Movie Title - 1080p.mkv
Example Movie Title - 720p.mkv
I’m trying to create a situation where I have the highest quality version for home streaming on a TV (2160p), a slightly smaller version for remote streaming when bandwidth is limited (1080p), and finally a compressed version which can be quickly downloaded to tablets for travel (720p).
Using the Plex client on both iPad and Andriod tablet, I can watch the 720p copy by selecting “Play version…” and picking the 720p 3mbps version. Plex reports that both the video (H.264) and audio (AC3 5.1) are playing via direct play. No transcoding involved whatsoever.
However, if I try to download that 720p version to either tablet, Plex insists on transcoding the audio to Opus. My understanding is that I can force the download of the 720p version under the Settings > Downloads > Video Quality, I’ve selected 720p HD High 4mbps, so Plex should be downloading the 720p file.
I can understand transcoding when the player can’t support the file natively, but when it can, what’s the point of transcoding. Is there any way to avoid it?
