Isn’t it naive to think Facebook does not have access to activity on sites and apps where Facebook authentication is used? Anyone concerned about privacy would not authenticate via Facebook.
should not be on the internet, or in todays modern society for that matter.
An unbalanced recommendation but might be appropriate for some.
Privacy in modern day life is difficult but it is what you make of it. As seen in the forums many users have alias, many use VPN’s, lots restrict there Browsers for trackers and ads, also use strong passwords. You can be some what private using the internet.
It’ not paranoia if they are really out to get you!
(and they are!)
Paranoia is a form obsession, diligence is being careful and persistent. Stay Diligent, stay safe is my motto for online activity.
Thanks for the updated apps.
But I am unclear which of the various versions in the sub menus
to select. I have a Google phone running Android 10
and a iPad Air about 2 years old.
What should I do?
Just update through the Play Store / App Store respectively… same as always on those mobiles / tablets ![]()
I and others told Plex about 1 or 2 years ago. They didn’t listen.
Well. As I see it now it only takes one user to fail a complaint and that’s exactly where Plex will be headed at. As sad as this might be, it’s a clear case of “told you so”. Even stupidity has it’s price …
@anon18523487 as of the 4th Feb Plex for Android 7.27.1 is still not available from the google store. I’m in Ireland, is there a problem with the app being approved and rolled out ?
edit: like magic a few hours after my post the update appeared on the google store
Staged rollouts can sometimes take a little while.
This is baffling and and if I am not mistaken in conflict with GDPR. Not a facebook user, never was, never will be. And yet data about me ended up at that corporation which I never opted in or agreed to.
I have not received any information about this problem from Plex. But if this happened, I would assume they are obliged to inform users.
If this is caused by “Login with Facebook” it feels like now is a great time to remove that option.
Plex iOS changelog for 6.10 reads:
- Re-enabled certain Facebook reporting events for a limited time on new app installs. Events remain disabled for app updates. see Plex for iOS - #128 by Stevenson-Price
What are those “Facebook reporting events”? Where are those documented? Are they opt-in? Why aren’t they mentioned in the Privacy Policy?
Don’t get me wrong, I love Plex, the software, they have an awesome team of humans which I regard with high respect, but lately (~past 2 years or so) it seems some crazy marketing people jumped their boat.
See Use of app store install metrics for Plex app for more info.
The info-link is nice … but the actual problem here is a different one:
- GDPR states an Opt-In principle: that means if somebody hasn’t specifically given consent that his data is shared with Facebook YOU ARE IN CONFLICT.
- GDPR also states that there is a 72h period any breach has to be disclosed to authorities and affected users. If you did not send an individual information (a general forum-post is not good enough) to all affected users YOU ARE IN CONFLICT.
- And finally GDPR states that you are only allowed to collect the minimal data you need to fullfill your services. So if you are not offering any services that are connected to Facebook and specifically for users that haven’t given consent that their data will be shared with Facebook … well, you might know already: YOU ARE IN CONFLICT
The problem here is not that the breach happened. The real problem is how naively and stubbornly Plex is trying to ignore standing law and industry best-practice principles. It’s highly unprofessional and a slap into the face of your paying customers.
GDPR and other privacy laws are about sharing private data. Plex will never share private data with others without consent. The information we are using in this case is for tracking app installs and opens. There is no information about “you” that is being shared.
This is utterly disgusting and the fact plex as a company cannot see why there is concern says it all.
NOTHING should be sent to FB from a device I use. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (and I am shouting)! I’ve no FB account and never will. I don’t care its ‘anonymous’ or some BS about limits to installs and app starts.
I’m still waiting on a reply from the EU data commissioner regarding this and have been actively evaluating Emby. This maybe the final straw that sees me moving on.
The tracking information is only enabled on a new install of the app. If you are concerned with this, install a previous version of the app, then update to the latest, no more info sent to FB.
The data was linked to the users Facebook accounts. That means that a connection from a persons Plex account to his/her Facebook account was made. That is the very definition of private data!
So - PLEASE - would you reconsider you post?!?!
And honestly, that is exactly my point: the real problem is the complete ignorance of Plex and Plex employees about what data privacy is all about. You behave like little children in this regard.
GDPR demands that you provide an opt-in! So by default NO DATA is allowed to be sent and it’s also not acceptable to force users to delete and reinstall an older version.
YOU HAVE TO STOP SENDING DATA PER DEFAULT AND INSTEAD ASK FOR PERMISSION IN ANY VERSION OF YOUR SOFTWARE.
Goddammit … what’s so difficult to understand???
Buddy don’t sign in with third parties to Plex, use email only. To remove your history with facebook visit there settings and change it now. Why do people trust these Companies like Facebook and Google. Don’t do it, there evil.
