Why is remote connecting not possible anymore after update ?.

Hi,
I have a Plexserver on windows now for almost a year, had some issues in the past but after an update early 2015 it turned out okay and i could use my tab and laptop outside my home fine.
Now a couple of days ago i installed the latest update and the situation is now back to square 1, no connection able from the outside world, i can see the home page, but after wanting to use any media the connection gets lost.
Local network play is just fine.
Only thing i can see in the plex log files that it starts and stops the outside port automatically, this whas the same error as there has been in the past.
Port forwardings in the router and firewall are ok, server has not changed, with ore without HTTPS no difference.
Nothing has changed from the windows side of things or my internal/external network point of things
Can i force listening on ?, en keep enabled on plex ?, so it will not disable outside connections automatically, because in the end i paid for the plexpass, would like to have total control over the plex services.
Any advice ?.
Regards,

Are you sure that you have enabled the manual port entry in the Plex settings? https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200484543-Enabling-Remote-Access-for-a-Server - That little checkbox to the left of “Manually specify port”, make sure that it is checked and that the port is the same as what you have setup in the router.

Hi Peter,

Just as i said everything was working perfectly untill the last update.
Now internally over LAN is unchanged and works great but the outside world can login and as soon as you open content the page says server disconnected.

I know my way around with routers and servers (IT professional) so i am wondering why my plex now says when i click on the heartbeat icon in the right upper corner listening to events, shortly followed by stopt listening to events.
secondly when using the webadress without the /web/ you get the reply from the webserver 401 Unauthorized, this come from the Plex Webserver, so we can conclude that the ports are all configured correct.

Greetings.> @Peter_W said:

I must say that I have a hard time following you on what the issue is, if it’s network related or something else. Collect all logs after a failed attempt (with debug turned on, not verbose), zip and attach to thread. Then I’m sure a Plex Ninja can figure out what’s happening and why.

Just to add when i test the connection to the Plex.TV platform and in another window i keep the status screen open is says Server publiceren via Plex.tv changed to true. directly followed by Server publiceren via Plex.tv changed to false.

This message was also in the past and it has been away untill this update.

My vision on the case is as followed.
For some reason Plex servers from the outside world keep on trying to connect to my plex server (also lots of hits coming from 3 or 4 server on the same port as the plex servers from amazon coincidence ???), and as soon as i portforward everything in my router (AkA open up my plex server to the whole world) to my plex server it works like a charm, then everything works and i dont get the messages Server publiceren via Plex.tv changed to false in the status screen.
But being a good IT professional and internet/network security is my daytime job (think corporate size routing systems and data center engineering), i as anybody on the whole planet should do use a acces list on my router because i decide who gets in and who not from what IP and on what port, and i use a pretty good VPN connection to connect to home if i need to whilst i am not on a known location to the router.

Conclusion the Plex server platform and amazon servers need to be able to reach my Private server or i can not use my Plex server ???, because it sets something to false that has relation to having external access.
Not really figured it out yet what exactly… but i will because i know my way around also in reading programming code and wrote some myself in the past.

My thought only is more of seeing the security issue here, all people who use plex that forward the 32400 port (standard one) or any port for that matter open up their internal network to Plex, and now its just a matter of time for those people to have their internal network hacked because Plex did not close the door good enough.

And this all because we want to be able to view our media everwhere we want.

My advise ** dont just port forward everything to your Plex server ** its just not safe.

UPDATE:
Opening ICMP for the Plex platform is not enough, for some reason its mandatory that the Plex network needs to be able to have full access to your Plex server to work properly.
Being a paying customer i hope there is a Plex service or services in the windows version of plex to deal with it (force enabled or so), because i dont advise anybody to open any port to any network because its open source software and other people whom have less nice intentions can easily find security holes this way, its just not safe.
I will not open my firewall and router to the rest of the world.
So if its not going to be possible i will stop using Plex en start using Emby.

If you want remote access, you have to open an external port on your router that will funnel traffic to the internal port 32400 on the Plex server. That’s the same for any external access for any machine/application.

Your right on that, and the ports are open, just ONLY for the originator addresses I say that are allowed, and plex dont agree with that because they need to be able to connect to my plex server as they see fit ??.

For some reason you reacted, READ the post … and after reading it react.

Plex is supposed to be open source software, why cant you change a lot of things then ?, why cant you decide who is allowed in externally without compromising your private network.
Or why cant you change the plex servers port internally ??..weird.

I am going to leave it at this people, i was a plex pass paid user, but i am not going to renew.
For all ignorant people…use plex with external access and always be sure that it could be that a hacker is looking in to your files, would you know ?..you opened a port on your own router for it.

PMS is not open source !!!

Opening a port is not an issue contrary to your statement as long as the app replying on this port is as secure as possible (Apache would be a great example).
