Why is tuning a specific channel so hard?

Furthermore Plex should just give us a tick box, Do we want the channel guide in grid or other and let us change it at will. The customer/user needs to be in control

The use of the guide like emby’s is trademarked and requires licensing
Plex decided to cut that cost by offering you the current browsing style. Doubt that changes, unless people are ready to pay for this.

We are already paying for it? After all Live TV & DVR is restricted to PlexPass users. That said I would pay extra for a ‘real grid guide’ My family and I are struggling with the current view as nice as it may be. Plex please give us the option on what view we want.

Good thing is we’ve resolved the patent issues and will be coming out with the grid view soon.

Plex Rocks!!! Thank you for the update. I think the browse view is very nice, Looks great and all but not what most are used to. It would be great if you keep the browse view as an option for users that wan’t it, I simple tick box for what view we want. I just told my family this was coming and I got nothing but a big smile from them, It will be a very welcome change.

Keep up the great work

Glad to read this! Yes, we’re going to keep the browse view so there will be more than one way to view what’s on TV.

That is fantastic! When do you think we will get this?

I wish I could say, as I am also looking forward to more options for viewing the program guide. Honestly I don’t know the ETA, but know that it is being worked on and coming very soon.

Honestly, just as a temporary thing, I’d be fine with being able to type in a channel number and have it tune to that channel. I don’t need a fancy grid view or some newfangled user interface. I just need the ability to tune to a specific number. If you’re feeling really nice, a number next to a channel name. That’s it. Please. Pleeeeeease.

Also would be useful to show the channel name and number listed in the grid view (plenty of room for that). Seems like a simple fix for me. On Saturday was trying to tune to a football game that had exceeded its allotted time and took forever to find it. Love the sports view but games often run long. Put the channel number where the date is now. We don’t need the date “on right now” grid view but there is room for both.

Yeah, I’m glad to hear about a grid view, but honestly it seems absolutely asinine short-sighted to not have ANY way to simply play a channel. Like, that doesn’t require a fancy grid view, it just requires a darned list of channels or even just the channel as a link with the shows.

Why on earth would anyone want there to be no way to just play a channel?

Who would have thought people know the channel they want to watch without having to figure out what’s currently on that channel first.

It will come. You can see the progression Plex is using in development. DVR first where live grid style viewing wasn’t really needed so much. Then getting the Live TV functional on different devices and getting this debugged and working well. UI for LiveTV should be around the corner (guessing) based on the progression.

That’s not any Ninja inside info or anything but just basing it on the dev cycle and what users have been told.

Carlo

This can’t be too difficult to implement, can it
? Even if we could just get an “advanced” hidden toggle to allow for typing in a channel number or something? It’s been frustrating to deal with having to rely on accurate EPG metadata parsing and not being able to tune to a known channel before an event starts for a long while now.

I stumbled upon this post and I am so happy to read this. My family thinks I’m nuts for putting them through the Plex DVR/live TV experiment without a guide. Now if only changing channels didn’t take so long! 6 seconds doesn’t sound bad but in real life
 It’s long.

Me too. I hate the layout. I just want to tune to a specific channel. It makes Live TV a pain! After going to all the trouble of bringing us Live TV you have crippled it with this awful interface

Interesting, that in the Android app as you scroll through “Watch Now” you see channel names and logos, but not on Web client. Would be super helpful to have it everywhere (especially where there’s actually MORE space for that
)

Also, I wouldn’t mind the current setup as much if you could search for a channel name and have that come up as a result you can click on to tune to.

You can in Web too. It’s a little different. At the top, the default is “Discover”. Change this to one of the other categories. Then the next level will be “All”. Change this to “Channel”, then select the channel you want. It will list the current and upcoming programs for that category.

Any word on progress on a grid view for the EPG? I’d like to buy a compatible tuner (my AverMedia tuners aren’t supported) and a lifetime subscription, but lack of grid view is a deal killer.

See this. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/298470/grid-view-update-for-dvr-program-guide#latest

Unfortunately, I don’t seem to have access to that thread.

Since I’m not a subscriber (and won’t be until I can get confirmation of the grid view) and can’t see that thread, can anyone give a summary of the status for me and others who may be in the same situation?

@Quinilin - Here’s the text copied from what kinoCharlie posted.

Back on September 28th I posted a “grid-a-licious” post providing an update highlighting the delay in bringing this feature to life, while confirming our intension to provide it by the end of the year. As I mentioned in that post, we couldn’t guarantee the delivery date due to the nature of software development. Unfortunately, we have had to push delivery out by one quarter due to resourcing challenges. The developer who was assigned to this had to be moved to another project. End of bad news!

To reiterate, grid view has been delayed, but is definitely not dead. The feature has been planned out and we’re still looking at bringing the classic “spreadsheet” style timeline view with channels, logos, and all the program information you need to get a sense of what’s airing now and what’s airing later on. You’ll be able to tune in live to a channel directly from the grid view while also being able to schedule programs to record as you navigate forward it time.

Our original plan was to deliver this by the end of Q4. We now have it as the #1 top new feature priority for DVR in the new year, with plans to deliver it by the end of Q1. That’s not the only thing we’re working on for DVR. You’ll see other hotly requested features (and fixes) coming to Plex DVR.

Thank you! While the delay is a bit disappointing, that’s good enough for me to go ahead and commit. Thanks again.
