Can’t wait to get grid style. I really dislike the picture view without channel numbers.
who cares about the grid?
I JUST WANT TO ENTER A CHANNEL NUMBER
I want to type in “705” and go to the channel i already know is 705. I don’t want to scroll, i dont care what is on there at the moment, i just need to enter my channel number.
Sorry plex, love you guys, but this is a complete oversight. Before you even created a discovery or grid, one should have had the basic function of being able to enter the channel number.
Allowing us to just enter a channel number as one of the option would be very welcome. Any update on this and all the new DVR goodness?
Reading all this really makes me regret having purchased plex lifetime… I’d much rather have spent that money on a lifetime subscription for Emby -.-
Disliking plex more and more, doesn’t help that every video of them promoting themselves have this overly happy guy talking about how amazing plex is, yet it misses half of the vital features that we have to request here only to end up at the bottom of their to-do list.
I have just installed Plex as a trial to replace dvblink and Kodi. Unfortunately the weird guide thing going on here is bizarre and does not pass the wife test and has said this will not work.
Plex, please hurry up with the traditional grid layout
Hoping Plex is coming out with this update soon. They say we should see an update to DVR 1st QTR 2018.

They originally said last year so don’t hold your breath.
@elan Any chance we can get the “Airing Now” grid as an option on the main page under “Live” - it would be good to be able to view by channel.
hate to say this as I have a plex pass lifetime…The Emby DVR implementation is much much better, and not just because of the grid guide.
I currently am not using my plex pass lifetime as the DVR was constantly missing recordings I had set.

Well that’s a matter of opinion obviously. Emby DVR is my main DVR I use and has been for quite a while. I look forward to moving to Plex soon as Plex is my main media playback system.
Emby has plenty of things wrong with it and many good things. Here are just a couple of the MAJOR pros and cons compared to Plex.
Pros
If it’s set to record and it can find a free tuner it will record and you will get a recording 100% of the time.
Has Grid EPG
Can support multiple different tuners each with it’s own EPG source.
Will share tuners with other devices on the network. If someone is using a tuner, Emby will use the next available tuner and not fail if all tuners on the first device is in use.
Cons
Doesn’t come with an EPG source and this must be configured separately by the admin. (not hard but may cost you additional money and time).
Absolutely no conflict resolution at all. ZERO. You can have one or two tuners and Emby will allow you to schedule two dozen recordings in the same time slot and you have no way to control what actually records. You will not get any warnings, nothing.
Sort of the same as conflict resolution Emby doesn’t/can’t schedule alternate recordings. By this I mean if a show is on two times in the day the scheduler won’t reschedule the show to use the 2nd timeslot if needed to free up a tuner during a busy time slot.
Worse yet is Emby has difficulty with recording shows you already have. It’s very peculiar with the names and season/episode matches. If you are trying to fill in back episodes of shows you have missing then you need to review each days shows EVERY TIME you update the EPG as it will add shows back you might already have. If you don’t remove them from the schedule then you may tie up a tuner recording something you already have and worse yet cause other shows/movies not to record (see above).
Live-TV use can easily mess up a recording if it’s using the tuner.
Playback of live-tv in many Emby clients is far worse and a crap shoot. FF 30 seconds at a time. Imagine trying to FF to half time in a football game. Horrible.
If you add an additional device or two to get more tuners then you will need you can “bypass” the conflict resolution issues somewhat.
So saying it’s “better” is a personal opinion more than anything else. For other people it won’t even be an option let alone “better”. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

So are they changing things? Can someone from Plex confirm the changes in guide?

There’s a sticky thread in the PlexDVR section.
I don’t have a Plex Pass so I can’t read the PlexDVR section, and a grid EPG is basically a hard requirement before I buy one.
I tweeted Plex but they didn’t respond. Maybe this is harder than they thought?
You don’t need a Grid to use the DVR section and I might go as far as to say it can get in the way. The current format of showing you all upcoming Movies and all Shows/Series upcoming is very easy to use for setting things up to record.
The Grid EPG is nice to have when you want to see what’s on a specific channel at a specific time or want to just use the grid to quickly tune to a specific channel and don’t know what show is currently on. Think CNN or Fox News.
Having the current view AND the grid view is what most of us want since it helps Live-TV function more like what we are used to.
Grid EPG is mandated as an acceptance factor by the family. It’s out of my control.
Yes clearly having both would be best as I can see some benefits to both.
Am I to assume from your response that they still haven’t implemented grid view?
Yep Grid EPG/GUIDE still is not present. It’s on the list of features they are adding to DVR/Live TV but we just don’t know an exact time frame.
Plex has a Recording Schedule, which when multiple items are selected is clear to read, so why not have a Watching Schedule.
A diy filtered list of live shows. E.g my fav show is on channel X at 8pm mon-fri… add show to list, Display channel name/time/sd/hd.
That lets us build our own personal guide for constant repeating shows. It could then provide notice of shows Similar to what were watching and ask if we would like to add it. Similar to “because you watched”.
You could also have a “watch list” i.e for chosen channels such as bbc/ITV (in uk) for new series/shows that are one offs. And add from current show/movie list to watch list.
Then give user customisable view, grid/list,show type etc etc.
This way it is a watch list and not an epg guide.
It doesn’t show all channels or all shows, purely your fav shows from fav channels.
I can’t be the only one that regularly watches the same few shows, from same few channels on repeat.

I’m justing reading through this thread. I’ll throw in my $.02 of comments based on other recent trouble I’ve had with Plex. I have come to the conclusion that Plex is a product stuck in DIY purgatory. It greatly longs to be a solution for the masses, but the amount of technical expertise and patience needed to use the product (specifically Live TV/DVR) limits it from ever getting to the masses. If you’re technically minded and you want to stick it to the major cable/satellite providers [for whatever reason] then jump in with both feet. However, be ready to get frustrated by public releases of both the server and player software that are deeply buggy. The server side recently went through a stretch where back to back 1hr recordings on the same channel would consistently glitch 1/2 way through the second recording. That may sound like a rare occurrence at first, but it happens more than you may think if you’re recording lots of broadcast shows. More recently they pushed an update of the player for Fire TV that would lose communication with the server on a regular basis, making it pretty much unusable to get through a show with any consistency. The “solution” for this was to sideload an older version of the player on to your Fire TV - not a “normal person” move at all.
I can’t recall how many times I’ve recently been on the edge of ditching it all and getting a DVR from my cable provider, but I hate the idea of giving them even more money. So here I am in this turmoil … all over a ridiculous thing like TV. Maybe I have issues - HA! - or maybe I just came in as a paying customer (I have a lifetime Plex Pass) expecting to get a good product in return without having to sideload and beta test “public” releases. Apparently that’s too much to ask at this point in the life of the Live TV/DVR portion of Plex. And it’s super frustrating to see them promoting features like VR when all of this is going on.
I can say that it’s been near flawless in managing my movie collection. Just know what you’re getting in to.

I haven’t personally tried because I haven’t paid for the premium package, but apparently emby DVR is much more stable than Plex’s at this point.
When is the grid going to be here? Last year they said 4th quarter, then end of 2017, then first quarter of 2018.
