Until they decide “the developer” needs to be “moved to another project”, or they decide they have to refocus on getting on more devices, or decide to prioritize the “adding some new functionality to enhance the user experience for DVR” part of their statement, or (insert excuse)…
Yup. First @kinoCharlino was ALMOST sure we’d get it in 2017, then Q1 this year for sure as it was the bigger priority, then Q2 this year because bug fixes was the #1 priority… "We’re working on it"™

I mad the suggestion as an earnest suggestion for helping PLEX improve and move forward with things users’ are asking for. Sometimes it takes a partnership (PLEX/ROKU, PLEX/AppleTV, …) to make progress. PLEX didn’t try to build their own streaming box, they found partners. Why not do the same for their DVR/LiveTV???
I’m not dodging your Q but I also don’t think it proper to use their blog for the discussion on using NextPVR. In a nutshell, I set up NextPVR to do my recordings and pointed PLEX at that directory for replay. That setup however lacked LiveTV on my ROKU’s, something I wanted when I cut off DirecTV. NextPVR does not have a client app for most of the devices such as ROKU… Google is your friend, lot’s to review.
I’ve been lurking on this thread, and since you’re asking for opinions now …
I’ve been a Plex user for many years, primarily for movies. It’s always served me well in that capacity, so when the Live TV/DVR feature came out I was eager to jump in. I switched from an OTA signal to cable through Comcast at the beginning of 2018, bought a Plex Pass, and jumped hard in to Plex. I primarily use the Plex app for FireTV on both a Gen 2 and Gen 3 device. My Plex Media Server is running on a 2017 iMac Intel Core i5, 40GB of RAM, and a 1TB fusion hard drive. I’ll cut to the chase …
I decided to implement Plex Live TV/DVR as my family’s main source of TV. I’m an IT professional, so they’re used to having “different” solutions for “common” tasks. Long story short, they and I quickly became frustrated by the random inability to tune channels, the lack of a grid style program guide (“How can I just see what’s on now and what’s coming up for each channel?”), dropped connections to the server while watching TV or recordings, recordings that failed part way through a show, and missed recordings that previously in the day showed on the upcoming recording schedule. I’ve spent many hours on this forum and working with various combinations of PMS and client software versions. I continued to be frustrated and disappointed, so I stopped using Plex for Live TV/DVR. Instead, since I’m using an HDHomeRun PRIME for my cable service, I now use the HDHomeRun app and I’ve ponied up for their $35/yr subscription that enables a longer term program guide and the ability to schedule recordings. This solution has been MUCH MORE stable. It has its warts too, but in general the family and I are enjoying the experience much more.
I continue to use Plex for serving stored movies, and I keep an eye on updated PMS and client versions. I’m hopeful that Plex will figure things out and focus on server/client stability and listen to people’s feedback in this forum. My 2 cents on the state of Plex is that they are far too scattered in their approach to provide a stable product with the core features that their users want. Honestly, it’s frustrating to see press releases from Plex for virtual reality features when I’m a paying customer struggling with the day to day usability of the product.

I’ve pretty much done the same as well. I have several PVR solutions setup for testing and personal use but this doesn’t allow Live TV for family members outside the house or for them to setup their own recordings. About 2 years ago I gave access to my Emby system to them and they really like it for DVR/Live TV and it has easy ways to change channels and view upcoming info/programs as well as support a grid based epg.
I find it much more flexible than HDHomeRun software for DVR. You can add the Emby recording directories directly to Plex and the files show up there as well so it integrates with a Plex setup. The other advantage to Emby I find is that it will share tuners pretty well. It doesn’t care if another program is using a tuner or not. So that allows family members to also use Live Channels on my Shield TVs if they wish without causing me any headaches. I have 9 tuners at present so I’m not worried about a couple of tuners being used by other programs as long as they don’t cause issues.

I knew you had both Emby and Plex setup on your server, but what you’re saying is that you actually use clients for both depending on the media you want to watch?
What’s stopping you from using Emby only right now?
Yes. I have every device setup with both clients so anyone can use either system at will. I install both Emby Theater and PMP on computers as well. I also have Kodi setup on a couple of devices but that’s another story.
Until Plex gets DVR/Live TV fixed/updated I only use Plex for testing and not for any production use when it comes to DVR type stuff. Emby is/has been what I use for Live TV/DVR as well as IPTV use as it just works for my needs. It supports cable, OTA and IPTV with separate EPG sources if needed. Plus I’ve done some “fixes” for Emby that allow me to map season/episodes in that system so that they match tvdb.
Gracenote uses different episode numbers than tvdb for lots of shows as well as mix up many shows like Hawaii Five-O/0, Will & Grace, MacGyver and other “reboots”. Gracenotes also runs some shows like Three Stooges without season/episode numbers and uses season xx format for shows like MythBusters when tvdb uses season xxxx (ie season 2017). So I have fixed/normalized this in Emby so I only record episodes I’m actually missing and not recording shows I don’t need.
Regardless of who scheduled the DVR recordings, they will show up in both systems so it doesn’t matter what system did the recording. They only care that their shows get recorded reliably.
I give access to my family members to both Plex and Emby and allow them to choose which to use. I also allow them to use Live Channels on Shield TVs as well as HDHomeRun on PCs or XBox to watch DRM channels such as HBO.
I don’t “fight the system” and just provide the tools to them and allow them to choose what they want to use. Each system may have advantages/disadvantages depending on the device used.
I like the flexibility of having both systems working in tandem.

Plex does allow you to now allow other members to watch LIVE TV outside the home. See below screen shot. They cannot schedule recordings but can watch LIVE TV
Notice I said “outside the house”. I should have said family members not in your Plex Home.
With Plex you can’t share DVR setup with anyone and LiveTV only to home members which is very limiting. If I can’t allow my Dad, Son or Daughter for example to setup DVR recordings then it’s not going to get approval in my household.
The other media server treats it like any other resource and allows the admin to determine who has access and what they can do.
Happy you found it. I am using the Web app on a desktop browser. I haven’t tried this on any other apps yet. Yes, “Airing Now” is not an option anywhere yet. Perhaps they are just testing it behind a flag before adding the full feature in?
EDIT: Also wanted to mention that, in addition to viewing the “Now Airing” menu by clicking on the “Settings” icon while viewing a DVR program, I can also see the “Now Airing” menu by clicking the “List” button as @SE56 has shown above.
The same problem discussed above, I would like a single HDMI solution which includes FTA DVR with a solid Grid Guide,
I don’t have a plex pass yet (close but no grid view is a deal breaker for me)
I think there is a solid option using XBox One tv guide,
Assuming you live somewhere you can use an Xbox USB tuner (Like me in Aus) or you connect an FTA STB that can be controlled through HDMI-CEC run through, the option I am going to go for is as follows
STB -> XBox one -> XBox One guide for live grid
Plex or HDHomerun PVR DVR -> XBox one app -> schedule and record
XBox one -> Netflix/Foxtel Go/Youtube/your WebTV app choice here (XBox one looks prety solid for TV app support)

Hey, this is my first post - I’m currently on a single month of PlexPass just to try out the DVR. Like so many others I am completely flabbergasted that they chose to implement this with such a poor UX (no EPG? Come on!). I agree with the comment above - there seems to be some conflicting priorities in a software company that makes these kinds of choices.
If they manage to make a working release in the next 30 days, I might stick around…
I love plex and have been using it for quite some time and heavily. It’s used daily in my house by me and the kids and a few family members across the country too. Honestly it’s amazing. However, I have to agree with the above. For want of a better description, the team are fannying around with things like VR support (dear god why? there must be a grand total of 3 people using it regularly if at all) instead of addressing this in a timely fashion. Admittedly no one else has done it right - emby lacks some features, kodi clients are ok, but not perfect and the majority of tvheadend clients are poor at best.
1, Standard epg “grid” style
2, allow multiple country epg matching
I don’t get the VR focus either. I’m pretty sure that there are more people currently using live TV than will be using VR even six months from now. I admit that’s a guess, but I would feel pretty safe putting money on that guess in Vegas. Seems like a silly choice to chase the latest fad that requires headsets most people, even with current price drops, still consider too expensive, and very limited programming options outside of porn.
