Why isn't Plex finding my TV shows?

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1488
Player Version#: n/a (happens on all clients)

First off, I’ve read the FAQ here and I can’t find anything that helped:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543057-why-is-some-of-my-content-not-found/

I’ve been puzzling over this for months: I have a folder of kids TV shows, eight folders in all, five different TV series. Only two of the series are being picked up by Plex scans. Over the months I’ve deleted the library, re-created it, moved the problematic folders out then back in. I’ve run all the Plex maintenance tasks, etc. The TV shows are named properly, and the library is a TV series library.

I have verified that the user “Plex” has read access to everything in this master folder. I’ve looked at the folders that aren’t being scanned (“Rescue Bots S01”) and they have the same permissions as the ones that are being scanned. Only Transformers and Dungeons & Dragons are being seen by the Plex scanner.

Any ideas of what I should try next?

Here’s a screenshot showing everything in the folder:

18%20PM

no that is not how you name them.

use path like

/media/tv/showname (year)/season 01/showname (year) - s01e01 - episodename.mkv

using above, for the tv library path in plex would be
/media/tv

Should be

TV/Curious George/Season 01/Curious George - S01E01
TV/Curious George/Season 01/Curious George - S01E02

TV/Transformers/Season 01/Transformers - S01E01
TV/Transformers/Season 02/Transformers - S02E01

etc

Also make certain user plex has permission to read the TV share (Control Panel - Shared Folders - Permissions tab)

Hmm. At one point I had put them in showname > season folder structure, and it didn’t help. I didn’t, however, do the full showname (year)/season 01/showname (year) - s01e01 - episodename.mkv…that’s a surprising amount of complexity.

Here’s what I don’t understand: out of the 2600+ TV episodes I have, where they are all organized in a flat structure of TVseries (season#), everything is ID’d properly other than these few kids shows. So clearly Plex can handle this simpler structure - and what I’d expect to see would be a lack of IDing the shows, not them being completely undiscoverable.

Anyway, I’ll follow the recommended structure for these shows, but I’d love to understand why it’s needed for only three TV series out of all the ones I have.

OK, I figured it out - and it was as simple as I was hoping. The only thing tripping it up was that the individual file names didn’t have the season number and episode number in them. I didn’t need to nest them by series > season > files. Series > filename is sufficient as it is with the other 2500+ TV shows I have. I’m not sure why I named these few series different than all the others, but I didn’t realize it until I looked closer.

So for everyone saying this complex nesting is mandatory, the evidence seems to indicate otherwise. I don’t mean to piss anyone off (hey @flow) but I’m happy Plex has simplified the requirements for IDing TV shows. :man_shrugging:

PLEX really only needs the S01E01 name in the file name. It doens’t need the show name at the file name level as long as the folder structure is proper north of that.
