Hi guys

Why does plex stop working when there is no internet connection,
sadly my connections are very unstable, only way at times for us to watch things is from the local PMS on our local network, but this seems to stop when we loose internet connection.

please help.

A connection to plex.tv is used for

  • user authentication
  • apps to locate the server

Disable user athentication on your server for clients in your local network by
Settings - Server - Network - (Show Advanced) ‘List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth’
Put either the network address of your local network in it (e.g. 192.168.178.0/24)
or a list of IPs of your local client devices.

Use client types which support either GDM or have a preference where you can define the server’s IP address.

Afterwards, restart the server.
Then make sure that your server and the clients always get the same IP addresses by either setting these IPs in the devices’s settings or by making a ‘DHCP reservation’ in your router.

If you are using web browsers as clients, make sure they don’t erase cookies of the domains

  • plex.tv
  • plex.direct
  • IP address of your server

when closed.

Or use Plex Media Player instead of a web browser, which is superior anyway. It also supports defining the IP of the server.

thanks, will try.

ok seems i got a more complicated problem..

little background first, I stay doing week 1100km away from my family/home/wife/kids.
My wife is having the problems home, so ye not to easy to diagnose.
My platform is a Synology box with Plex installed, the interface for the TV is a AppleTV.

She just said it’s not working, then asked her to stop / restart the NAS, that was then followed by stop/start plex, on which i got it says plex not reachable, thus me thinking the plex screen come up with a comment of authentication.
it seems when she opens the plex interface via a browser she gets the below… this is right after the words PLEX was flashed on the screen. (as per the Synology, plex is running, and thinking is also as the screen flashes Plex for a second it is running. but now what… ?

There is no way of changing those preferences if you don’t have access to your server.
Plex running on an embedded system makes it even more difficult.
I am assuming your wife is not that technically inclined, so she can’t be bothered to perform some advanced procedures.
All you can do now is to wait until internet is restored.

If you have a tv or other media player which supports DLNA servers, you can try and use this instead. (if DLNA is enabled in your server)

hmmm, we thinking only the app interface down, i do have DNLA enabled, and the TV have direct access to that.
let me ask her to check.

thanks.

awesome, thanks, at least they have access to media via TV…
iPads not, but something is better than nothing.

so I had 192.168.0.* specified,
changed this to 192.168.0.0./24

Ah, yes. Then this is getting ignored.

Is it working now?

well the network is working atm. kids are ecstatic… so leaving good enough alone for now…

prob have to disconnect the network and see if all works, problem is for me to test that i need to disconnect the network, that means i’m disconnected as I’m connecting via the VPN. will do a in person test in 2 weeks when I’m home again, thanks for helping.
