To understand what has happened best to get logs after restarting the server and running a scan of the library

There are NO remote/network drives. It’s all local!

Internal HDD/SSD or USB Drives?

There are a ton that are simply missing that aren’t in any library anymore. Snowball Express wasn’t there and I added it back on along with Happiest Millionaire. They were both gone previous to about Feb 1 or so. They just keep coming up - someone will say “hey, you used to have that movie on Plex” and I will be like @$%&!

I have been looking at all the logs and there is no evidence of the deletion / removal of these```

E:\plexdata\plexmovies3\Happiest.Millionaire.1967\Happiest.Millionaire.1967.avi
E:\plexdata\plexmovies3\Snowball.Express.1973\Snowball.Express.1973.avi

They were there as from Feb 01, 2018 11:46:31.

You could run with a large number of log files - the default is 6 log files for each category but you can change that by RegEdit and if logs captured as soon as you notice movies disappearing then there would be a chance to capture the removal in the logs. Drive Failure / Drive unavailability / Access issues impact is minimized if empry trash after every scan is not ticked

To increase logs, RegEdit
and select HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
and right click on Plex Media Server and select New / REG_DWORD (32-bit) and create item and name it LogNumFiles and give it a value of, say 30 decimal for 30 log files

They disappeared a long time ago, I just don’t know how long. It doesn’t have anything to do with the library that turned up errors, I simply moved one from c: to d: and didn’t remove the library reference to c:. I would guess that you would have seen it in these logs.

I’ve run into the same problem. I’ve only noted the Lord of the Rings saga (The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003)). Logs are attached but I do not know when they vanished - I’m the only one with access to the actual files and the admin account on Plex. Last time I dropped a movie listing with export tools it was around Christmas and the disappeared since then. I haven’t run a comparison between the export vs the current holdings, but I think there are others missing.

I just found more missing tonight - The Dark Crystal, Sahara, and The Secret of Nimh…simply GONE. I turn on the delete function to remove movies that we don’t want and then turn it off. No one else besides me uses any browser interface to get to Plex - it is only through a device.

Ubuntu 17.10 with RAID5 w LVM on 4 WD40EFRX, running Plex 3.31.1 and some containers including Transmission, Couchpotato, SickRage and Headphones.

No errors in the OS logs, etc. Webmin and Portainer report no issues.

Movies seem to periodically and randomly come up missing. No evidence of an issue in the Plex logs. Remote Access is disabled. Library>Empty Trash is disabled. Library>Allow media deletion is disabled.

I don’t have any issues with losing music or tv files, only movies. No other files on the system, such as photos, etc come up missing. Only movies. Only Plex and Couchpotato manage those files.

I have grep’ed the logs for “filesystem” and “ERROR” but not sure what else to look for. Suggestions?

How frequent does it happen?
You could run with large number of logs = say 50 or 80 and capture the logs as soon as you notice it and regularly keeping track of what is there. May be periodically you run this tool http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/254248/rel-exporttools/p1

For increasing number of log files - the advanced hidden setting is LogNumFiles - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/

For Windows the LogNumFiles field would be a REG_DWORD which is created as DWORD (32-bit) value

what format is this filesystem ?

Were the missing movies on this usb drive?
Network shares and usb drives may drop off and for that reason the recommendation is not to automatically empty the trash after library scans - so that media info that may disappear when access to the drive is lost can be recovered from the trash - anyway this would be a different matter as it relates to the metadata and not the actual media files.

I am curious about the error above from boost boost::filesystem::status: The request is not supported:

I’ve read through this thread and have been unable to determine what corrective action to take. Contrary to a number of posts, Plex did delete ~250 from my USB connected external hard drive after I ran “Refresh All Metadata” or “Scan Library Files”. The drive is NOT network connected and I am the only person with access to the MP4 files. Plex Empty Trash is turned OFF. My files are backed up, but restoring is time consuming. How can I prevent this problem from happening again? If it makes a difference, the deleted MP4 files were ones I converted to MP4 from DVD. No other MP4s appear to be missing as noted by the Plex file counter. Thank you for your help!

I know this is an old post but did anyone ever find a definitive reason this is happening? I know for a fact it’s been happening to me too. I go to watch a movie that I know I’ve had in my library but just not watched in a while and it’s gone. When I say a while, I’m talking a year or more. Movies that are great movies and I know I had, just gone. Not on the drive. I have remote deletion disabled.

The only way to determine if it’s even Plex doing the “damage” would be for someone to “catch” Plex in the act through Plex log files. So far, no one ever has and no one can find a logical reason why Plex would delete any content when the delete function is disabled.

I am having the exact same issue with my PLEX server. And I DO back the library up nightly to a another server. At least once a month someone in the family will tell me a movie is missing. Sure enough it is gone from PLEX and the local drive. I will go look on my rsync drive and there it is.

No one has access to delete inside PLEX, and no one has access to the SMB share the files are stored on. Indeed, the audit logs on the NAS show me the file was deleted over NFS from PLEX’s IP address.

There is most definitely a bug inside PLEX that causes this random deletion to occur.

This is great – any chance you can catch the Plex logs for that same period of time?

Next time this happens (soon enough), I will correlate the two.
