Why won't my preroll videos work?

I can’t get any of my Preroll videos to work. I’ve followed all the steps and enabled everything in my library. When I had Plex setup from my Macbook, the preroll extra worked fine. I recently switched everything to a NAS setup and now it won’t work no matter how I configure the path. It will play trailers before my movies just fine, but not the prerolls I’d really like. Any ideas how to fix this?

I take it the paths entered in Settings > [Server Name] > Extras > Movie pre-roll video are correct and (if there’s more than one) properly separated (, or ; depending if you want multiple videos to play in sequence or one to be played at random)?

Does your Plex Media Server’s system account (default: plex have permission to access those preroll videos?

I believe so? How would I check that? I’ve got the trailers enabled and have all the prerolls separated by semicolons. I first discovered this feature about 2 months ago, set up a preroll and it worked just fine. Then about a month ago I switched to the NAS server and updated to the latest PMS and it hasn’t worked since. I did find a thread here in these forums where many people noted how Plex may have changed the behavior/functionality of the prerolls, but those comments were all from July of 2021. I had it working more recently than that so I don’t know that that’s my current issue.

I don’t think this feature has changed at all over a few years. What might have changed is the behavior in a few of the clients (e.g. some having separate toggles for trailers and prerolls.

As for permissions: that’ll depend on what platform your server is running on; most Linux/NAS platforms have a dedicated system account under which the PMS is running. That account needs to have access to the files.
On classic Linux, the default user is plex. On Synology‘s DSM 7 the user is PlexMediaServer.
