I have some movies in HEVC 1080p 10bit Color. However, for compatibility I also have them transcoded into H.264 1080p 8bit Color. My TV is capable of HEVC at the file’s bit-rate with 10bit color. Yet it automatically defaults to the second file. I have ensured that the HEVC version is above the H.264 file in the Play Version list. But unless I select it specifically, Play does not automatically pick the file that is both better in color and bit-rate (though i believe color is more important than br).
Well this shows it picks the most suitable not highest quality item:
And this shows that 1080P should be 8bit depth not 10 as you indicated.
Maybe try an 8bit 1080P HEVC and an 8bit 1080P H.264 and see, I would think in that case it would pick the HEVC over H.264.
You sure no transcoding is taking place on the 10bit files?
According to both the TV’s log, and the server’s Now Playing section, it is directly playing the 8bit H.264 file.
Tried the test, always picks the one with higher bitrate.
As far as I am aware HEVC 1080p CAN be 10bit. My TV is capable of both HEVC, 4K, HDR, and 10bit. So I don’t understand why it is picking the lower quality.
That example just states that files with those specs are usually direct playable to most devices. The TV is capable of playing the higher quality file and the bandwidth is there, as it plays it fine when you “Play Version”. However, it is just not automatically giving it priority.
