Looks like this is a pretty old thread, I havn’t been able to read through the entire thing. But what is the hold up? Is this feature being implemented or is there some sort of blocker? I have changed my settings to compatible but I have lots of HEIC pictures that are not showing up.
Hi, same need here.
As Lifetime member, I would need this HEIC format (iOS default) to be supported in the near future.
Honestly, it’s getting pretty sad that this is still outstanding in 2020. Can we stop adding features nobody asked for and start adding those, such as this, that have been sitting here stale for years?
I’ve just realised this issue today. 3 years and no fix?
Those grinning idiots on the Plex “About Us” page should be ashamed.
Why deaf ears on this??? I’ve tried to contact all of their executive team members asking for this support… I’ve posted on their blog posts as well hoping to get some more attention. We need to let them know that we want this support!
Since Lightroom for Windows added support for H265 import I’ve changed my HEIC/HEIF for obvious reasons.
To my surprise new media stopped showing in camera uploads.
To my even bigger surprise Plex doesn’t support these formats in 2020.
Well, at least we get new features no one ever asked for.
+1 for this. It is the default format on our iphones. Plex is not useful for photos without this featyre.
Bump.
There is no point to pay for Plex unless they offer HEIC support
Plex: why not use https://github.com/strukturag/libheif to decode/encode the images in the transcoder?
Any news on this?
finally made the jump to set up photo uploading and such. then immediately disappointed to see it stop working due to HEIC not supported. not even an option to convert/trans code lol
what a flop. any word on why would be nice. or a road-map to support.
generally i stopped using it for onedrive for work stuff. but there was a gap of time that it was on automatically via apple.
happy to pay one-time fee or something for the codec. anything is better than something that isn’t functional
Why is there still no support for HEIC? I mean it’s like a car has no support for tires. Plex is one of the leading media centers and HEIC/HEIF is now a standard if not the successor to jpeg.
I wrote an email to the plex support and this is their answer:
We don’t currently have formal or official support for HEIC “live” images in Plex, sorry.
If you’re having particular issues, please post specific details in our support forums at https://forums.plex.tv/ if you haven’t done so already. Our staff or friendly community should be able to help you out.
Thanks for your interest in Plex!
Ok, here I am discussing this topic with a bunch of other Plex-users. Why is here no single statement from the Plex-staff?
There is a feature request for this. Please add your vote there. HEIC/HEIF support in photo libraries (new photo format for iPhones)
Plex does not comment on features before they get added.
Come on now. It’s been way too long and I’m literally missing thousands of photos in my library. Please provide us all an ETA, and add HEIC/HEIF support ASAP!
Yeah, I did the same thing. Paid my one time fee and found out HEIC is not supported. The main reason for me to get Plex is organize my photos and videos. Now I can’t view some of my photos from our iPhone.
Its been like three years, that poll is useless
Could someone please make a meme about Plex as a mediacenter is not supporting HEIC, that would be great. Thanks.

With Google Photo changing their storage policy, now would be a great time to fix this!
Very disappointing to see that this thread is over 3 years old. I’m a new Lifetime Plex Pass member and hope that the company delivers on feature requests that really are no-brainers, such as this.
