Will not Cast from Plex Apps to Sonos but will play from Sonos App

Server Version#: 1.31.0.2254-43df1e6e
Player Version#: 3.4.4

Hi, New user so trying to use all the latest versions as of 28.04.21

I have the server set up on a WD EX2 Ultra.
Plex Windows app
Plex mobile app
Plexamp.
Sonos is the Version 1 app.
Plex Pass

I have enabled Remote Access and and that is Fully Accessible outside of my Network.

The issue is I can play from the server via the Sonos app but if I try to play from either of the mobile Plex apps, it mostly pauses then flicks though the songs in the blink of an eye without playing any audio.

Hello…anybody out there?

I’ve just worked out that my problem lies with the fact my server that’s on MyCloudHome is not able to link to the outside world. I’ve spent hours trying to get it to have remote access, but it keeps failing.

I’ve been unable to cast to Sonos from the web app or the mobile app on Samsung A31 for a couple of weeks. I changed my passwords to a bunch of things and I thought that had mucked things up, but after completely re-installing everything, and losing my Plex server on MyCloud and having to wait while EVERYTHING uploads to Plex again, then fix all my tags, I still can’t cast to Sonos on anything. The Sonos app only finds Plex podcasts, not any of my content, My Cloud mobile app won’t play anything in my Plex folder, it’s a complete mess.

I cannot be bothered getting logs and what not, there’s clearly problems with Sonos and Plex not talking to each other again, and given that both products claim they are the best thing ever when paired, it’s a bit of a stuff up.

I got a Sonos speaker, then got Plex, then got My Cloud JUST so I could play all my old music files on this flipping speaker, and now I can’t get anything talking to each other.

I hope someone gets back to us.

Heidi

Hi Heidi

I hope someone gets back to us too…! haha
If you are only finding Plex Podcasts I think it is because you have to go Pro and pay to get access for Sonos and Plex to talk properly.

Mine took a while for the Enable Remote Access in the Plex to sort itself out, I’ll try and remember what I did to make it work.

The Plex Pro is pretty good with the Plex Amp app just very annoying why it doesn’t work when using it with Sonos.

If only a Plex Employee would look at this issue…

Well, when getting frustrated that the Sonos App started playing up after the latest Plex updates. I tried playing straight from the Plex Amp that previously didn’t work… would you believe it… it now works! Well done to the Plex employee that fixed it … would have been nice to have been told but hey hoe. Maybe they did read this … although it does feel like I’m talking to myself on here… even Heidi has given up… Anyhow it now works

I have been having a similar issue since May, and it is not fixed, so I suspect this is some network finickiness somewhere, and not about a Plexamp update. I have spent long hours with Sonos trying to fix it to no avail. It briefly worked once in the past few weeks, and I have no idea what could have been different then.

Today I factory-reset my router, unplugged it and the cable modem and all my Sonos devices. Then I re-plugged my modem and router, and connected one Sonos device (by ethernet), and casting from Plexamp still didn’t work (though, like you, playing Plex from within Sonos is ok - as long as I don’t try larger playlists).

Guys, you think this might have something to do with the Sonos generation of devices? I mean, i consider gen1 all those devices that require a Sonos S1 mobile app (with black icon) to work, and gen2 all those that require the “Sonos” app with yellow icon to work.

I am currently experiencing the above issue with a Sonos Play5 gen1. Are your devices gen1 as well?

I do have a mix of “gen1” and “gen2” devices. However, I recently tried resetting everything - first the router, then Sonos devices one by one. I started with a “gen2” device. After only connecting that device, I still couldn’t cast from Plexamp to it. So I don’t think that’s it.

Hi

I’m just using Gen 1 Sonos devices and the Gen 1 Sonos app.
All my App and Plex server software was up to date as when I posted it was fixed for me.
There is a new update of Plex server but I haven’t updated to that as yet.
If you have both Gen 1 and 2 maybe try just running all Gen 1 as a test?

well after a couple of blissful months of it actually working… the latest update has killed it!

I feel your pain. My entire Sonos - Plex integration is borked, Sonos app, Plex app casting to Sonos, whatever. Nothing works. I’ve posted about it with details. I was working fine. This is not a configuration issue.

Last couple of days I cannot now cast to Sonos from Plex app running on Android or IOS - but can cast when playing via Windows app and via hosted web Plex.tv. Haven’t had this issue for some time.

Re associated Sonos account with Plex and its come back for me…….

I now am experiencing this. I was able to cast from my iPhone Plex app to any of my 4 Sonos zone players as recently as a couple days ago. Now, poof, it’s gone from casting options. I can still play via Sonos, but I’m paying for a Plex Pass so I can find music by genre. Things I’ve tried:

  • Restart Sonos
  • Restart Synology NAS
  • Restart WIFI & router
  • Reinstall Plex Server on NAS
  • Removed Plex service from Sonos then added back
  • Removed Plex app from iPhone, then added back

I’m at a loss. It seems my Plex Pass is not being honored. Thoughts?

Expect you have done this but try signing in at Plex.tv > Account > Other Services > reauthorize Sonos. This is what I followed when I last posted and this process worked for me.
