Will Plex for XB1 play directly from my Plex Media Server sitting on my home Network Server?

Everything is on a CAT-6 wired network running through a 24-port gigabit switch. The Network Server runs the software for my voice-actuated “smart home” and is also the location of the Plex Media Server which accesses all my media (in Plex Libraries) sitting on an 8TB NAS.

Questions:

  1. Do I need anything else to make this work or just the Plex app for XB1?

  2. Can I run the Plex server at max (20mbs) speed over the wired network through the XB1 Plex app?

Install the Plex app on your Xbox, and as long as you have your Plex server set up for remote access you’ll should be able to connect and start watching your movies. You should be able to get full speed, but that depends on what the Xbox can handle with incoming data and how the app actually works. I have an Xbox 360, and the app works, but I’ve never looked at the actual speeds.

Poifect… Thanks.

I have watched Full Bluray Rips (30+ Mbps) from my PMS to the XBox One App without issues. There is an issue with some bluray rips causing stuttering. We haven’t found a definite answer to what exactly it is but the only common factor I have seen is low reference frames on the straight rip. (That shouldn’t be a factor, but it is the only common thing I have seen)

Your Server does need to be set up for remote access so the Xbox can find your server but after that everything will be locally.

You’re welcome.

Yup…HAL/Plex server all setup for remote access. Sits on top of my DMZ server. Between the XB1 on the living room TV and Chromecast on the other six, anyone should be able to use the Plex app on a computer, laptop, tablet or phone to access anything they want. Haven’t had this much fun since the heady days of the Radio Shack Model 1 (4K of memory, 72-column B/W screen and an audio cassette deck for data storage since floppies hadn’t been invented yet). Ahhhhh…the experience of re-soldered keyboards because they were too expensive to replace. Had an original Apple Macintosh with a 128K, 3 1/2" floppy. Then Paradise came out with a 5MB 9-pin SERIAL hard drive (imagine the throughput speed). Thought I died and went to heaven. Figured I’d never need anything bigger for the rest of my life. What an ass… Soon we’ll have cloud-based wearables.and be connected to everything all the time. Wait…crap…that’s SkyNet!!! Watch out for Genisys in 2017!!! If you see Ahnold walking around, you know we’re screwed…

That’s how I feel every time I buy a new SSD…
