Wishlist For Plex Playlists

This isn’t exactly a bug report, but more of a wishlist of UI and QoL improvements that I would like Plex to implement into the playlist feature in the future. For reference, I primarily use the PMS web interface when putting together playlists, but this would apply to all platforms to the extent that I’ve used them (Android, Tizen, consoles, etc.)

I put this together recently when trying to assemble and edit a 500-item playlist mixing TV episodes and movies, but I also commonly create extensive music playlists where these would apply as well:

  1. More items per screen: At 100% zoom, I count 12 items per screen. Even when I zoom in to 75%, this only expands to 18 items. Would love to see better use of screen real estate where each item is contained to a single line.

  2. Multiple item select & re-order: While we can select multiple items, we should be able to drag those items as a consecutive batch.

  3. Item embedding: If I add an entire album, TV series, season, etc. I would like the option to have those items collapsible into a single entry. As it is, if I add an entire 22-episode season to a playlist, I then have to drag each one of those episodes to the correct placement. It also makes my combined episode-and-movie playlist look insane (ie. if I want a playlist with Captain America, the Agent Carter TV show, and Captain Marvel, I would like to be able to treat Agent Carter as a single item on the playlist. I can then expand the “Agent Carter” entry and rearrange or remove individual episodes where needed.)

  4. More sensible item dragging: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been working with a huge playlist, tried dragging an item up a dozen pages to where I want it, accidentally moved my mouse a few pixels to far, and had it drop the item back at its starting place. I would love to see the boundaries of the invisible drag box, know how far to go to drag it at maximum speed, etc.

  5. Shareable playlists: I know that this has been requested forever, but let me send a playlist to my friend who is also a Plex user so he can stream it off of my server. Sort that into a new section in his Playlists section (ie. Playlists From Other Users). Even better, let us both collaborate on a single playlist with items from both our servers.

Something that’s also long overdue is the simplistic ability to SELECT MULTIPLE TRACKS while in a selected playlist and be able to add those selected tracks to another Playlist or a brand new playlist altogether. It’s such a tedious and frustrating thing to not have since the playlists inception. For music in particular, It causes me to have to have TWO side by side instances of Plex Web open to make sure that I am adding the correct tracks as I have multiple copies and versions of songs. I’ve noticed that I’m having to remember the exact album cover and track runtime to make sure I’ve selected the same exact track that’s been added to a previous playlist.

We are also missing a standard SELECT ALL along with the already implemented DESELECT ALL while selecting multiple items in Playlists. It’s pretty annoying on a tablet to select EACH AND EVERY ITEM, scroll, and continue selecting, scroll, select a few more, scroll, all because SELECT ALL isn’t an option.

What would be nice is two icons, one for SELECT ALL, the other DESELECT ALL. Done.

These simple things have been on my Playlist improvement wishlist for 5 years now.
