Wont connect to chromecast "no players found"

Never had a problem, no setting have changed on my end. I have tried rebooting all equipment in the loop (computer, TV, chromecast, modem, and wifi).

When I click on cast or sa its now “Select player” in the browser app, it says no players found.

I can cast from chrome and I can cast from my phone (not using plex) so it is not my chromecast, it is a plex problem.

How do I fix it?

I am having the exact same problems. It started yesterday. Chromecast seems to work as normal outside Plex. “No players found” from Plex.

Bump. Same issue here. Started out of nowhere 2 days ago after 3 years of working fine.

Note: when I point my browser to https://app.plex.tv/desktop, my casting devices do appear. When I point to my Plex server directly, i.e. 192.x.x.x:32400 (which I’ve always used when within my home network), I get the “no players found” error.

Same problem. I too get the “No players found” - and my Chromecast has problems on another video-site too. I suspect that Google updated some code in the Chromecast that broke Plex and my other video service (www.dr.dk).
Hopefully a fix will be released soon. @Plex

I can’t get it to work with eamuscatuli’s “fix” - it still doesn’t work. :frowning:

Same issue. This is causing Plex to cast via screen mirroring instead of directly (Not getting the “Ready to Cast” screen on my TV anymore).

  • Plex Server Version: 1.14.1.5488
  • Chromecast Versions: 1.32.141268 and 1.36.141427
  • Chrome Version: 72.0.3626.81 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Edit: this may be the same issue and certainly seems something has changed in the Chrome Version 72 update: [Cast] API is not available in Chrome 72

Thank you, this fixed it for me! Does using app.plex.tv instead of the local IP of the server have any practical impacts?

When I go to https://app.plex.tv I get a message saying something lige “the server is not on a secure connection” which makes sense as my (local) Plex server doesn’t use SSL cert.
So before I press the button “always” or “just once” - the “Cast…” shows up instead of “No players found” - but once I’m okaying the not secure connection it displays “No players found” as before.

Maybe it has to do with Chromecast and casting from insecure connections?

@liljay2k Google released Chrome 72 from beta into their official stable state earlier this week so it wouldn’t surprise me if more people start seeing this issue (I’m the OP for the post linked). If you happen to find anything that works, I’d love to know what it is!

@kvitso the only practical impact you may see is possibly in streaming quality or something similar - if you stay on your local network when streaming (the same network the server is on), it’ll more likely than not be faster than streaming over the internet from your local server then back to your player.

[app.plex.tv] does not fix anything for me.

Still not working. Guess Ill charge back my credit card for the months service.

FIX: So I wanted to share what worked for me in solving this issue (beside using the app.plex.tv which I mentioned earlier).

Thanks to user amargherio’s post, I realized that a recent update to Chrome is precisely when I lost cast functionality with Plex. Therefore, I downgraded my Chrome browser on my Mac from Version 72 to version 71.0.3578.80 and turned off automatic updates. I can now see all my Google cast devices on Plex.

To downgrade Chrome, I simply uninstalled Chrome, and re-installed an older version that I downloaded from here.

To disable automatic updates (and prevent Chrome Version 72 creating the same problem all over again), I followed the instructions from here.

Not sure if this will fix the issue for everybody, but I wanted to share what worked for me. Good luck, and hopefully Google will fix this bug in a future version of Chrome.

I’m unable to get it working but the issue is with not being able to cast from http:// sites, it does cast correctly with https:// sites. So casting from https://localhost works and I changed the setting: Settings/Server/Network/Secure connections: changed from ‘Preferred’ to ‘Required’.
But then Plex is having issues playing the media properly.

I’m having the same same or similar problem. I’m on Chrome version 72.0.3626.96 (Official Build) (64-bit) and the Plex Web Player can see other players on the local area network like on the Android tablet or phone that’s advertising itself as a player, but Plex Web can not connect to the Chromecast even though I can get Chrome to duplicate it’s display onto the Chromecast.

Unsecure connections are allowed if the Plex player is on the same network as the Plex server and Chromecast.

Is this a new problem with the Plex web player? Plex server is v1.15.0.659 and the Web client is v3.77.4.

Same issue started today for me. Caused by browser update. Browser itself can cast, Plex cannot. Hoping update to Plex soon.

Same issue here. Casts fine from Chrome version 72.0.3626.10 but ‘No Players’ found using Plex server Version 1.13.9.5456 running on Fedora 28.

This is an issue with Chrome that now does not allow access to the Presentation API to any sites that don’t use HTTP.

Workaround is to use HTTPS to access the server and when Chrome complains that the wrong certificate is being used, accept it. Chrome will remember your choice.

Found a fix using an incognito window in Chrome instead of regular browsing. Just use https://app.plex.tv/desktop and it should work instead of showing no player found.

Hope this help

app.plex.tv works fine for me without incognito. I want to cast locally instead though.

it is local. app.plex.tv is just the code of the player. which is loaded into memory of browser. That does not determine where the content comes from. When you cast on the same local network the stream goes from your server computer to the chromecast locally.

I added https:// to the front of the bookmarked URL - and it did the trick!
Many Thanks!

Here is the new URL --> https://app.plex.tv/desktop?secure=1

Chrome 72.0.3626.109
Windows 10 1809

app.plex.tv is not using my local network here.
I tried to successful setup one of my HTTPS domain but the issue remains: it’s still not local, even if my domain is redirected to my Internet IP.
Maybe it’s because I use OpenMPTCProuter.
So I don’t use casting directly from Plex anymore and I use tab casting.
