Chromecast devices not showing up in Plex Media Player?

Hi all - just got a new Surface Pro running Windows 10 64-bit Installed Plex Media Player (not the app store player) and everything is fine but in the cast / fling menu I get “no players” message even though I have two Chromecasts on my network. My Plex server is running on another machine which does not have a current version of PMP installed but if, on that machine, I right click on the Plex server icon in the tool tray and Open Plex that way, and then go to the cast icon / menu in the main browser window (not the icon for the Chromecast extension in Chrome), “Cast” is an option and under that I can chose which Chromecast to cast to. I googled for this and couldn’t find any solution that works - the best one from a couple years ago talked about disabling experimental player in the Plex advanced settings but that option seems to be removed now.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue?

I believe I’m seeing the same issue.

Plex Media Player desktop app shows “No players found” under the cast symbol.

But when I access Plex via the web interface I can successfully cast (it shows “Cast…” in the dropdown and when clicked it brings up the default Chrome casting interface).

I note that the Plex Media Player desktop app is one version ahead of the Web version. Perhaps there was a regression somewhere?

My details:

  • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Version: 1607. Build: 14393.576)
  • Plex Media Player desktop app (downloaded today, not the app store app. Version 2.12.6)
  • Chrome (Version 55.0.2883.87 m)
  • Plex Media Server (Version 1.3.3.3148)
  • Plex Media Web (Version 2.12.5)
  • Everything is installed and run on the same laptop.

@ Plex: happy to help troubleshoot further if you need.

The only official way to cast to Chromecast on Windows and Mac is through Chrome, which means it only works in the Plex web app.

Thanks phertiker - not the answer I was hoping for but at least now I know.

I have been loving the Plex Web app for direct play my lossless music to my Chromecast. I am happy to now have the Plex Media Player to direct play my lossless music on my Windows computer. I was going to ask why include the Chromecast icon in the Windows version of the media player if it doesn’t work but you know I just don’t care any more as my desk is shaking from my lossless music playing on the computer now driving the 15" sub. (did you feel that?) Go Plex!

So… first time user of Plex, thought I would give it a try, as I even considered buying the lifetime premium. I try to stream a series on my TV via Chromecast. First attempt, via web page. It works until it freezes. I restart, and it works again, for a few minutes, until again it freezes. I check online for known issues, some said it happens only in the web page version. So install the PC media player. I try to play, but no luck, I find no chromecast device in the player. I restart the chromecast and the player, nada. I search online and I find this piece of forum, where, alas, a software which costs 119 euro! is just bad. A windows 10 license is less than the full Plex license. And Plex does… what? At least I hoped it would be glitch free. So, 119 euro for this??? No, thanks.

I am using Plex through Chrome, not desktop, on a windows 10 laptop and still getting the “No Devices Found” error. What can I do to troubleshoot?

So today when I get home from work, my Plex app on my phone only says “No players found” when I try to connect to my Chromecast player. Worked this morning, yesterday, and every day before that.
I can get it to play to my Chromecast player from my computer, but my phone doesn’t seem to find the player anymore.

Any ideas?

My phone with Plex app finds my laptop Croomecast as a player, but not the Cromecast device on my TV. How can I get it to detect devices other than my laptop? (Plexpass subscriber)

Im running into the same issue. Using Chrome i cant cast Plex to any of my chromecasts. I can however cast the entire tab wich is not what i want to do. On the phone it works perfectly fine.
I think Chrome installed some kind of an update beacuse general behaviour of the casting feature has changed somewhat.

Same here. Always worked from Chrome but stopped a few days ago. Fine from my phone.

“No players found”

Happened in plex webplayer just now. :S Android app still works.

This just happened to me, it was working last night but not today. Nothing changed on windows or plex. I use chrome as my browser. It was as simple as clearing my browser history and it started working again.

Same issue. Just stopped working a couple days ago. Ive tried clearing all history, cookies and temp data (very annoyed that it didn’t work btw, thanks budkeg1). now im logging into a hundred sites again and trying to remember passwords lol. Plex is my life, i don’t have cable because I have Plex and chromecast in every room. I need this! it is still working from android and I can cast the tab from chrome but I don’t like to do it that way. Any help appreciated.

Adding my voice to this issue. Chromecast isn’t showing up in desktop software, nor in chrome webplayer. But I can cast the plex tab through chrome itself and get my music playing that way. Works fine from android phone.
Plex server version 1.13.6.176-dd1845234,
desktop client version 3.83.1,
web version 3.57.1

Same issue here.
Server Version 1.14.1.5488 on Synology
Web Client Version 3.77.4 in Chrome on a Surface 4.

Obviously an emerging common issue given the number of views this thread now has…

Same as Lansluaght.
Plex server version 1.14.1.5488
Web version 3.77.4

I find I cannot connect to any Chromecast now. I have PlexMediaServer-1.15.1.710-ece95b3a1-armv7hf_neon installed on my Synology DS215J, I have a Win 10 laptop running Chrome Version 72.0.3626.119 and Plex Media Player Version 3.83.1. If I click the Cast icon from the Plex web page (http://app.plex.tv/desktop?secure=0) it sees no players, yet if I click the Cast icon in Chrome it sees all my Chromecast players. (see attached)

cast2

cast1

This is a sort of workaround, but when casting this way, high CPU usage on the laptop causes break up of the music…

I have the same issue. Running a Plex- Server on a Qnap Nas. The Server-Webinterface doesnt show the Chromecast. The other media apps on the server show the chromecast so a network failure cant be the reason. I am using the chromecast 2.
Qnap Plex Server Version: 1.15.1.710
Any official statements?

I have resolved the issue. Following this post Plex, Chromecast: "no players found" and changed every ssl settings to force. In the Serverapp and Serverconfiguration. Then be sure u use an ssl encrypted connection. Following this link https://app.plex.tv/desktop?secure=1 and the Castbutton show the option to send.
