WORKAROUND: Plex on ios keep crashing with the new update

Can’t replicate it on my two iPhones nor two iPads. All on latest iOS and latest Plex iOS app.

iOS 15.2.1 and Plex 7.27.

PMS is on latest public release.

Browse and play works perfect as does download.

I can try and do some sort of video capture/video screen capture of the phone as it is freezing, if that helps? not sure how but I willing to give it a go, if it helps.

Right after the update it freezes on me as well. Same version and on 2021 iPad Pro. Wonder how an app with such bad bugs gets released! It freezes and has to be stopped and restarted only to fail again shortly thereafter. Very frustrating!

Seems a few in here are running the PMS beta.

People understand what a beta is yes ?

Again, no problems on our iOS devices but we are running PMS public.

I’m running PMS using the public update on rwo QNAP nas devices and have the problem, independent of the beta server issue. It happened with the recent iOS app update.

Fair enough

On latest build as well and on our iPhones and iPads no such issues.

Those having issues need to send support logs as this isn’t impacting everyone.

Son in law running an iPad Pro 2021 without issues to our server.

We are running two iPhone 7’s, one X an iPad 6th Gen and an iPad Pro.

All on latest iOS and all running latest Plex.

PlexDebugInfo.zip (2.5 MB)

Im fairly certain this happens in library where there is new additions

Library without new addition wont freeze

Rolled back to 1.25.3.5409.

Plex on iOS under 5409 seems more stable but eventually crashes. The app has a tendency now to freeze/crash navigating Settings, swiping left then browsing libraries, or minimizing video playback to browse.

I will attempt to attach logs - but the app tends to freeze before I can share them.

The iOS app for me was rock steady prior to iOS 15.2.1

And, I do understand beta releases … and to The Plex devs’ credit - the beta releases are generally as stable as the public releases.

Shouldnt this be hotfixed? Ios is probably majority of phones using plex

So i have a fix but it’s unrealistic

If you have a full library with all additions. U cant get around it. If its one

1- search the new additions. Open them so plex load the arts and all
2- ur app wont freeze anymore

I can do this with succees 100% of the time

My Synology PMS is showing as 1.25.3.5409. (That is public release??) I hope I am not on beta as I am set to the “public“ update option quite a while back to not deal with these weird things any more.

I sent iOS/iTunes and PMS logs but don’t have a big technical arsenal although I am happy to do what I can to help resolve it.

Open them?

  • From within app or within web interface?
  • So just click them so it shows the single item on the screen?
  • or click and play a few seconds of each?

Within app

For example show X was added. You need to search show x and open it in app (without going through the tabs). Once u open it. U can go to tabs and it wont freeze

I press the magnifying glass top right when first open app and start typing to search for a newly added item but it freezes the time I get a couple letters in. I was willing to do this ‘many many many’ times as the situation is pretty bad.

It is likely what you call a ‘full library’ though so maybe that’s the problem here.

I’ve given up using the iOS app for now. Frankly, it’s unusable now - as has been noted, can’t even get logs before it freezes. Just using the web access via chrome with no issues. Clearly, it’s a problem in communication between the server(s) and the new iOS plex app or a problem with the new app version on the iOS recent update (iPadOS 15.2.1). I’ve used the iPhone version today and it doesn’t seem to have the same problem for me - same iOS version, but not iPadOS of course. Same plex app version numbers as well, both 7.27. And obviously the same servers. iPhone works, iPad doesn’t. Hmmm…

Verified that on the same iPhone, no freezing or issue when using Edge browser to connect and watch content on same PMS.

Good idea.
I tried on my same iPhone to Plex web on chrome, Firefox, and safari all seem ok too. (Same WiFi, same server, same phone). I didn’t test it all deep and hard but poking around it seemed ok.

Just adding to the thread to keep it bumped, and so I can more easily check on when a fix is out.

Having this freeze after 5-10 seconds issue on 5 separate iOS devices. Zero are working correctly. Non-iOS seems to be ok

How is this still not fixed. How is this not even addressed officially yet? Very weird
