I'm relatively new to DVD ripping and have just ripped a few of my music DVDs and films onto my PC which is running the latest Plex server.
The files were ripped using MakeMKV and then encoded in Handbrake to m4v using the strict anamorphic setting.
They work absolutely fine on my PC in Plex in a browser, windows media player and VLC. Widescreen DVDs play in widescreen and 4:3 ones play in 4:3.
On the PS4, everything seems to play in 4:3 so my widescreen DVDs get squashed.
I've tried adding the original MKV files to Plex and they have the same problem. The PS4 is set correctly, it displays a full widescreen image in the Plex menus for example.
Are there any hidden settings in Plex (apart from the usual subtitles/audio stream menu) that I've missed?
Thanks for any advice. I checked the FAQ and it wasn't mentioned.
I'm seeing the same sort of thing with DVDs ripped as mp4 via Handbrake on the PS4 native app. Any advice from Plex on how to handle those or force the aspect ratio?
Hi robotron. There's an issue with the PSX apps where anamorphic transcodes aren't rendered correctly. We're aware of the issue and working with Sony to address.
Phew! I was going crazy trying to sort this so pleased to find out there is a problem and it's not me :)
I was concerned as the files play perfectly through when they are accessed via the PS3 video tab when accessing the PLEX DNLA, and every other method. I just love the PLEX PS3 app though so would love it to work.
