Best format for DVD rips on PS4?

We’re trying to build a library from our DVD collection however when streamed to the PS4 via Plex the SD signal is being played in an SD sized window with bars top and bottom instead of full screen. I know it won’t look good at full screen but I’d rather have that than only using 50% of the middle of the TV. I’d rather not have to “zoom” with the TV. Any suggestions?

Also, on all of the videos there is a small bar (1 pixel wide?) at the right edge of the video that is very distracting since it continues up into the black bars top and bottom. Is there something I should change in Handbrake to avoid this?

Best bet it to refer to the supported media formats on https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204377253-What-media-formats-are-supported-

Yeah I looked at that but the video still plays with black bars on all 4 sides. I’d like to make it full screen.

  1. When you play the “problem” DVDs back on a regular DVD player, do you have the same issue?
  2. Which program are you using to create the DVD rips?
  3. Does this happen for all DVDs, or just some?

If this is only happening for some SD content, then it’s possible that content is not in anamorphic widescreen. I have 1 DVD (10 Things I Hate About You) and 1 TV show (House Season 1) that are not in anamorphic widescreen, and these files give me bars on all 4 sides unless I use the zoom feature on an episode-by-episode basis.

On a side note, all of my files are .mkv, and they play fine on my PS4. If I try to up the bit rate above 8Mbps, I experience some issues, but that doesn’t bother me as it’s not my primary device. For reference, all of my media and my Plex server are connected directly to my router, and my PS4 is hardwired to my router via a powerline adapter; nothing is connected via wifi.

DVD rips are currently afflicted by an anamorphic rendering bug in the PS4.

Try to rip a DVD to the Universal or Normal profile in Handbrake and make sure the container is MP4. The anamorphic problem only affects videos which much be transcoded or direct streamed. Using the High profile sets the Level too high for the PS3/4.
