Wrong screen resolution and aspect ratio detection in TV mode

I’m running Android version of Plex player downloaded from Google Play on my GPD XD Plus, which is a device with built-in gamepad.
App behaves normally in mobile mode, but in TV mode, all videos will play in squished aspect ratio, as below:

Video is supposed to have 1.78 aspect ratio.

Edit: In display mode “original”, frame size is 1280x405, which suggests the app is believing the display resolution is 1280x1280 instead of 1280x720.
In display mode “letterbox”, frame size is 1280x228, which suggests the app is believing the display aspect ratio is 9:16 portrait instead of 16:9 landscape.

My conclusion: the app mistakes my 1280x720, 16:9 screen for 1280x1280, 9:16 screen, but only in TV mode and mobile mode works fine. Is there any way to work around this?

I get correct playback (screen size) o android tv, and roku except on Comet. My TV tuner/player correctly resizes the image to fit the screen on all channels including Comet…
Live TV on Plex or Recorded TV doesn’t (Comet only). It would be nice if there was a menu option on the player to correct screen size in these rare circumstances. Comet displays squished.
