Stretched video on Android / Sony / Samsung / Philips TVs - Any information/solution?

I’ve been a Plex Pass user for a couple of years now. I recently bought a Philips Android TV and some of my movies are stretched horizontally. This is super annoying and after lots of research, there doesn’t seem to be any solution to this problem.

I’ve noticed that all movies in 2.35 aspect ratio get stretched but normal 16:9 do not.

This does not happen on my Chromecast or computer. As others have said, the aspect ratio cannot be changed in TV settings since the app controls that setting (it’s like changing the aspect ratio in a phone app).

Is there any information on how to solve this? Some have said that optimizing for TV solves the issue, but that is not a solution (I have over 200 movies and several 4K HDR movies that I DO NOT want to transcode).

Any help here would be appreciated!

I do not think you understand (of maybe i was unclear). I know the concept of anamorphic format. I also know how to shoot with anamorphic lenses and how to then correct for it in post.

The movies in 2.35 aspect ratio are squished vertically/stretched horizontally on the TV. If I watch them back on my computer or phone (through Plex) they look fine. It is only on the TV that movies with this aspect ratio look weird. I.e. circles are not round, people become fat and so on…

Also, playing the same movie through Chromecast on the same TV results in NO stretching/squishing.

I’ve looked into this and it seems like i cannot change the aspect ratio. I have a Philips Android TV (55PUS8203) and the Android apps automatically changes the aspect ratio and it is something that the user can not control. Someone in another thread compared it to changing the aspect ratio of ones phone app (which is not possible).

I feel like the Plex app is doing something wrong and trying to apply the correct aspect ratio, but fails.

I will try to re-encode a couple of files and see if that works! Yep, the TV is only available in my region (Sweden).

Do you have android tv or just a Plex app on your tv?

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my Philips TV ( 75PUS8303/12 ). I also looked up my manual and this says that the ‘aspect’ function of the tv is not available in USB-playback and Smart TV usage with the PLEX app is.

I downloaded and installed a new firmware for the TV and that solved the issue! The update was not available in the TV OTA… Had to sideload via a USB stick.

Philips support was not able to solve the issue from the chat I had with them. The software was not listed on their (swedish) site.
