I Just started using plex for the first time and I can’t get my X-Files seasons to show the correct information in the Plex player. I have tried naming, and renaming, and naming again.
The first two episodes are showing up correctly, episode 3 then shows the correct episode number, but the incorrect name (episode 4’s name), episode 4 shows the same information as episode 3, and then the rest of them are out of order by 1 since it was duplicated. See Image:
I have the file path like this: D:\Media\TV Shows\The X-Files\Season 01\s01e01 - Pilot.m4v. Based off of how thetvdb.com has them listed out.
I have also tried naming the episodes ‘The X Files - s01e03 - Pilot’ and ‘Pilot s01e03’. I have done the “Plex Dance” after each one, as well as deleting and remaking the library completely, all with no luck.
I’m hoping I’m just missing something simple as I’m new to plex. I moved all other seasons out of view so I can update them before moving them back in.
You probably need to adjust your naming to the schema expected by Plex.
Example:
TV Shows <- the folder linked to your Plex tv show library
Show Name
Season XX
Show Name - sXXeYY - optional stuff.ext
Show Name - sXXeYY.ext
Where XX is the season number, YY is the episode number and .ext is the file extension.
Plex will ignore the optional stuff after the sXXeYY pattern… you can e.g. add the episode name to better find stuff in your file manager
More specific example for The X-Files:
D:\Media\TV Shows <- the folder linked to your Plex tv show library
The X-Files
Season 01
The X-Files - s01e01 - Pilot.m4v
The X-Files - s01e02 - Deep Throat.m4v
The X-Files - s01e03 - Squeeze.m4v
...
The X-Files - s01e24 - The Erlenmeyer Flask.m4v
If you have enabled Local Media Assets in Settings > [Server Name] > Agents > TV Shows (e.g. for TheTVDb or The Movie Database… depending which agent you selected for that tv-show library; default should be TheTVDb) and prioritized that metadata source over the other sources of the agent, Plex will consider embedded titles in those files instead of the file names.
That’s ok, if your embedded titles are structured according to the described naming schema. However it appears your embedded titles are different (e.g. 1-10 Eve – which is (a) not in line with what Plex is looking for and (b) not in line with the episodes as listed on TheTVDb.com). https://thetvdb.com/series/the-x-files
Ideally… rename the files to match the naming schema and then opt for either removing the embedded metadata or lower the priority of Local Media Assets in the agent settings.
