X265 encoded video will only play on (some) AppleTVs if changed to ACC Stereo from 5.1

Plex Server Software: 1.30.1.6562.-915986d62
Plex Server: macOS Big Sur 11.7
Apple TV 4K

On some Apple TV 4Ks - tested this across 5 of them, some of them will not play x265 video unless it is changed from 5.1 to stereo. It has the spinny wheel, and occasionally sound will start but no video. If I change playback settings to ACC Stereo - plays fine with video and sound.

I have noticed that it is some of the first versions of the Apple TV 4K - the newer, later generations work fine and can play without an issue without a change in settings, and the file plays fine in other devices such as Phone (both iOS and Android) as well as on smart TVs.

x264 5.1 play on all devices fine, including the older Apple TV 4Ks, without having to amend settings when launched.

Anyone have any ideas, as I am moving more and more of my files to x265 and it is getting to be a bit frustrating.

Thanks for any help.

Where do you change the playback setting to ACC stereo? In the client or you re-encode the file? I don’t think there is a setting like this.

I have a similar issue on Apple TV HD, pre-4K:

I just assumed it can’t play HEVC.

When the video is playing on the Apple TV, swipe down and it will bring up playback settings for that video. Go into that and one of the options is to select Stereo. As soon as that is selected, the file plays.

Solvable, but annoying. I hope it works for you.
