Good day, I hope someone is able to assist me with a problem that I encountered.
I just got an Xbox One S, and installed Plex, all good and done. I try streaming via Wifi between the laptop and the Xbox One. It is okay, but certain high quality movies lag like hell.
So I decide to connect my laptop and xbox one s via an ethernet cable, thinking it would work better in streaming. The weird thing is though that when I do this, Plex no longer recognizes my laptop’s server, while the Xbox One’s Media player is able to identify it still.
I tried a number of work arounds, but I would really love that someone could give me a guide on how to do this properly. Should I mess around with the IP and DNS setups in the Xbox or on my PC ?
The Network status on the Nat Type is labeled : Strict when I do this lan setup.
Also as a seperate question, would I be able to connect a NAS via Ethernet cable or USB to the Xbox One S, and would it work?
You shouldn’t be connecting the laptop directly to the xbox, you need to connect the laptop to your router/switch. The only way what you are doing would possibly work is using a crossover Ethernet cable, but then you wouldn’t have internet access on either device.
If you want a wired connection between your xbox and laptop, you need 2 Ethernet cables, one from the laptop to the router/switch and another from the router/switch to the xbox. If this isn’t what you are trying to do, I’m sorry, but this is the way you made it sound in your post.
On your 2nd question, the NAS is a network device. It wouldn’t connect directly to the xbox, it would also connect to your router. Then you would mount the drives on your laptop where your server is (or run the server on the NAS if that is the way you want to go and have a compatible model). It would not connect directly to the Xbox however.
Thank you. This is what I was trying to do. I’ll get a switch then to have a wired connection between the two devices for better streaming quality.
@Raziel do you not have a switch already from your internet provider? I don’t believe the Xbox One can use both the wired and wireless connections at the same time, so if you want an internet connection you will probably need to either connect to the switch built into your router or at least connect the new switch to the router.
