Yesterday i bought myself an Xbox one and was hoping to get plex running on the box.
My setup before today was Synology DS211 and ATV2.
Now it is the same nas but Xbox one instead of ATV2.
I am new to the whole Plex system but it seemed pretty easy to setup , i got it connected on my Xbox one after a while , being able to navigate all my movies and TV-Series , but when i try to play a file , i get an instant error saying "an error occurred while attempting to play this video".
When i try to run DLNA instead (ugly interface :( ) thru the xbox one i can view all the movies and tv-shows.
I dont know why you are getting this error, but I am curious to find out how well it will play if you ever get it to work.
Xbone maxes my CPU out when using Plex (not DLNA, that direct plays), so I can't help to think your NAS might cripple under the load. Could be wrong though.
The NAS not being able to handle the demands of PMS would be my guess. Try running the PMS client on a seperate computer, still use the NAS for storage and see if you still have the same problems.
My setup is:
Xbox One -> Workstation (PMS) <-> DS1515+ (Storage)
i will try with PMS on my computer instead. One of the reasons i bought my NAS was that i did not want a computer being on standby all the time so it´s a shame that it does not work properly.
One thing i do not understand tho , why is it possible to stream thru DLNA properly , but not via Plex? (for XBone)
It's possible the Plex doesn't think it can direct stream the same file, so its attempting to transcode it. An easy example of this would be a full blu-ray to MKV rip. Because the Bitrate is so high, the PMS/app doesn't support the full bitrate and that means it will require transcoding.
DLNA on the other hand doesn't rely on what the client tells the server it needs, so it will just play the same file, if it can. The Plex client on Xbox One and PS4 have a limit of 20 Mbps I think for bitrates... If your trying to play a file, and you don't have the option for "Highest" setting under the selected bitrate/resolution. Then that means the PMS will transcode it for playback.
They came out with Native MKV support, along with support for other file types, but made it difficult/impossible for apps to share that compatibility. So until this gets worked out, most files will be transcoded when played through Plex, even if they could be direct played through the native DLNA app.
