If I use Plex on my PC, the same movies in that same folder, will play without any issues. So the XB1 displays the files, its when I click it that it gives me the error.
Will Optimize fix this?
This sounds more like an issue transcoding. The reason is that when the transcoder fails currently all the app see’s is that the server stopped send it data so it gives you the cannot find server/unvailable error.
The best option would be to restart the server and then try and playback one of the files that is failing and then attach the Plex Media Server.log. This will be the log that contains what is happening during the request and the restart before hand will keep the log down to a minimum.
@jmckee Ok, I figured out where the log file is. This error keeps happening randomly, its very frustrating. Question on log file, if I go recreate the error message now, does the log file list in that directory, show it right away? How do I know if it does or not?
And when you say, share the log file, you mean attach it to this thread to see if someone can decipher it?

If you attempt to play a file back the server will automatically log what it is doing in the Plex Media Server.log. Everything that happens is added to the bottom of the file until the file reaches around 5MB then the logs cycle. (IE the first log file changes from Plex Media Server.log to Plex Media Server.log.1 and a new Plex Media Server.log file is created with the most recent actions) This process repeats to a maximum of 5 log files.
If you attach here someone will definitely be able to decipher it for you. I personally am in the process of moving so I don’t have as much time as I normally do, but if I see it will be more than happy to help try and log through it as well.
You may have already done this, but when I first setup my system I had the same problem: Sign-in to the Plex server via a PC/Mac, go to settings (spanner/screwdriver icon), select the Server tab, and make sure it says, “Server signed in as __”, where __ is your Plex account. I found that I had to sign in to my Plex account on that page too and after that the Xbox One could find the server.
I’m having a similar problem and have been able to confirm the issue is Server side.
I recently updated to the latest PlexPass PMS and my setup seemed to be running very slowly. I then downgraded to that latest public release, backed up my original server settings by renaming Plex Media Server in AppData>Local> to Plex Media Server.old. I then started up the new install and allowed it to recreated the Plex Media Server folder in AppData>Local.
The server was running much quicker and works on everything just like everyone else said (ex. Web App, Android App, Windows 10 App, Playstation 3 etc.) except on my XBOX One.
~~I then shutdown PMS , backed up my new setup, restored the original, and then my XBOX One (and everything else) but in the slow way I had it before. ~~
~~I tried to compare the two sets of files, but I didn’t really know what to look for. ~~
@gymaine going through that log, I dont actually see an attempt to play Man of Steel on the Xbox One. What it looks like is first one movie was playing. And after it finished you switched to Man of Steel in google Chrome.
If possible the easiest way to try and sift through the logs would be to restart the server, attempt to play man of steel on the XB1, and then shut the server down after you get the message. This will keep the log file really short and heopfully I lot easier at trying to see what is happening. Also before doing this, enabling network logging from the Xbox One settings menu will add some additional logging from the Xbox One as it makes it requests and attempts to play the file.
Ok, @jmckee I know my posts are weeks apart, but I managed to get time to do this again. Here’s my updated error log, after I restarted my plex server (which is my PC).
I restarted the server, and tried to play 2 files, at approx 12:56 pm. Open Season and Lego Super Heroes, both came back with the cannot communicate with Server message. Then I played another file, Rio 2 and that worked (because its on a different drive).
Let me know if you can help decipher what’s causing the error. Thanks again
Sorry for the delay Gyamine. Looking at your log I am seeing error parsing something before the playback starts. I believe it might be related to extras (but not 100% sure). I forwarded the information to the Xbox App Developers who said it looks like a server side issue.
I saw this error popping up in another place as well, but have not received any feedback as of yet as to what is causing the issue. For some extra information do you have extras/trailers enabled before playback that could be causing an issue? (The error I am seeing looks like a problem parsing the trailer information but still trying to track it down to be sure)
Thanks for the note @jmckee I did have the option turned on for Cinema Trailers, but because I don’t have plex plass, that never shows as an option I assume? I just disabled it, and will try and see if the error still comes up.
Any luck getting additional information on your end?

Unfortunately, not at this time. It was kicked back and forth for both the server and xbox one teams to look at but once it goes to the internal the Ninja’s do not see more information on it. In another thread Moussa has stated that the new build is waiting for certification, so hopefully that might help as well, but we wont know until it gets out of certification.
The big problem with this issue is that I have only seen it in 3 logs with people having issues so it seems to be very difficult to reproduce. (Outside of your library). I will send in more information based on what you just said because that should rule out my theory on trailers (Which I also should have noticed sooner as well)
