Constant "Server Not Available" on Xbox One

I’ve been looking forward to the Plex app for Xbox One being released to the people who don’t have a Plex Pass subscription, so when that happened I immediatly started configuring it. Here’s the setup I have:

  • Plex Media Server 0.9.12.19 running on a Synology NAS (wired connection to router)
  • Xbox One with the latest Plex app (wired connection to router)

When I log in through the web interface I can browse my library and see that everything seems to be in order. However, when I open the Xbox One app it loads for a few seconds until it hits me with a “Server Not Available” error. I can’t even browse my media. I have ensured remote access is possible. I also verified if the UPnP on the router is working correctly, which it seems to be doing. I have re-linked, reinstalled, rebooted both the Xbox app and the Media Server but no luck so far. I have made sure that secure connections is set to preferred on the server side and the Xbox One app has it set to Always (just to be sure). I also enabled logging on the Xbox One app and the server side (Debug & Verbose), which spit out the logfile attached.

I was hoping Plex could be a drop in replacement for the rather limited Media Player app on the Xbox One, but so far it has only given me headaches.

Additional configuration things I did:

  • Upgraded the server to 0.9.14.6
  • Added firewall rules on the Synology for the ports mentioned in the Synology Plex FAQ

No luck yet.

Same issue. All other devices can see the Plex server and play media from it, but Xbox says it is offline. I have already upgraded the server and created an inbound port firewall rule per https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/174837/server-offline

I thought it was in Plex Pass beta for the past year? Why did it go public if it didn’t work?

Have you tried changing the secure connection on the XBOX to anything other than always?

I might have described that wrong. The setting is on Xbox One is set to Always, but that setting itself is called something like Allow fallback to insecure connections. So basically, when set to Always it should be allowed to use insecure if necessary.

Gotcha. Have you used http://www.canyouseeme.org to verify the port is open?

Yes, it checks out as successful on the port specified in the Plex Server settings. Other devices in my network can browse the library without a problem (iPhone for example) even when not on a WiFi connection but on a 4G network. It’s not the fastest browsing I’ve ever seen but it works.

My NAS is an older model (Synology DS211, ARM processor) which won’t support any form of transcoding, but that shouldn’t be a problem here should it? I won’t be watching on the iPhone, I just want a better media playing experience on my Xbox One. I assume Plex just serves up the media like the default Xbox One Media Player app does through DLNA? At least that shouldn’t be stopping the server from being unreachable.

Tried the Samsung Smart TV app, just to see if that had similar issues, but no issues whatsoever. I coupled it to the PMS with the pincode, it found the library and I could directly play anything I wanted to. The user experience is a bit shoddy, but it works as it should. I don’t know if the Samsung TV app requires a remote connection or not, but I’m starting to think the issue isn’t necessarily in the PMS setup.

@devnl Mind temporarily sharing your server with me so I can reproduce? My Plex username is the same as my forum name.

Sent you a friend invite. Guess that should do the trick.

@devnl You need to share the server with me, friending serves a different purpose.

Hmm, not a whole lot of difference between what I did and should have done it seems, only missed the sharing step because I did it through my mobile >_< Anyway, should be sent now.

I’m having the same problem ‘Server not available’ error. All apps on my local network can access the PMS. Remote access ports are open and forwarded correctly.

Is the xBox One app reliant on DLNA. Are there any other settings that I should look at.

No, it is not. The Xbox One app specifically is restricted from browsing the local network to look for the Plex Media Server so it connects to Plex.tv to retrieve your server’s information and then connects to your local server locally based on what information it was given.

But some server’s are constantly showing not available so that is what Moussa is trying to determine with the server share is why it is pulling the server information but still unable to find the server locally.

Exactly same problem here with the same configuration, “Server Not Available” error. I checked in the logs where I found: “ERROR - handle_stream_read error 104 Connection reset by peer”…

Strangely, the Xbox One appears in the available devices on the Plex App (web or iOS). When connected to my Xbox from my computer’s Plex App, I can launch a video on the Xbox’s Plex App. It seems that the Xbox can only receive commands from the server but cannot send some to it…

I hope it can help to find the solution!

I recently switched to plex and got everything working except the xbox app gave me trouble with the server not available error. The fix for me was to initiate “optimise database”, once done Xbox app worked perfectly. Hope that helps you all.

I initiated “optimise database” too and now it’s working! Thanks a lot!

Well what do you know, optimize database seems to be the solution indeed. I’d like to flag @CtrlAlt7 post as the answer but I clicked No instead of Yes (stupid).

Consider it done.

Thank you!
