xFinity Remote Access Problem SOLVED

Something started interfering with my plex remote access this week. This was all coincident with the recent API server fluctuations, but I knew it probably wasnt related so after digging in I found out this:

xFinity had silently turned on a new feature they call “xFi Advanced Security”

This effectively took down my plex remote access. Symptom is the “Not available outside your network” error message in big red letters on the settings > remote access page. Disabling the xFinity security feature fixed this problem. Here’s how to do that, should you have enough confidence in your ability to protect your
network without this feature.

From the admin panel at:

https://internet.xfinity.com/

Your choices are:

Overview - People - Devices - Network - More

Goto:

More > My Services > xFi Advanced Security

Disable xFi Advanced Security

Wait a few minutes (xfinity recommends 10), then reload the remote access settings page. It should be green now.

I really dislike this move to cloud based configuration of what used to be done on a local router. Doing it silently adds to the fun.

At a higher level, “Local Control” seems to be an issue on this board generally, it seems.
