I use it to full satisfaction
I use Xplay daily, with 4k/UHD/HEVC HDR & Atmos content, and (external) subtitles. I have no playback issues. Iād suggest a tweak here and there, but nothing I really care about. It seems one needs a more recent WebOS than 2.2, I have no idea where I can see which version a run, but I guess it is good enough.
I recommend it. I tried the official Plex app yesterday again, and that one just chokes buffering. My server is on an older MacMini (late 2012) and direct play works without a problem.
Oh thatās odd I tried xplay now but it still forces trancoding when using subtitles, which doesnāt seem to work with 4K.
The DLNA and official Plex works as well, but also no subtitles. So Iām still on the regular plex app but no subs on 4k so far.
Thatās not an XPlay problem, per se. Thatās most likely because youāre using PGS subtitles. You can check to ensure youāve set the XPlay option ānever transcodeā, which is helpful - but not for this.
Realize that the PMS has to transcode to bake in a requested PGS subtitle. That requires a very capable processor to handle a 4k stream, most people donāt have that much power. And even if you did (or tried hardware transcode), the PMS transcoder doesnāt yet handle HDR, so the result wonāt be HDR.
If you want subtitles on 4k content, you really need to look into external subtitles (e.g., SRT format). That format is handled by the client, not the PMS, so you can direct play the video stream and have the client overlay the subtitles.
Oh that might very well be it. Iāll try to see if I can migrate the subs to SRT format.
This is something you can easily test by disabling the subtitles. If it works, the non burnt in subtitles are the problem. Good luck!.
Dont forget, the official Plex app for LG WebOS doesnt handle external subtitles such as SRT without transcoding (amazing isnt it?)
Thatās why people want Xplay, because it doesnt force you transcoding of external subtitles
But i cant use Xplay due to the infamous āRed Ring of Fireā which i call it
I donāt know how you are set up, but here (WebOS4 on LG C8 TV), the official client DOES play SRT subtitles without transcoding. Maybe you have the client set up to always transcode. But Iāve been running for a long time with SRT forced subtitles (for instance), and it works fine. Select a PGS subtitle for a 4K playback, and youāll be screwed.
I only use XPlay to avoid the specific issue of this thread. But, honestly, Iām moving to Apple TV 4K, if for no other reason that the TV, with its 100 mb/s networking, is easily overloaded by 4K bitrates. At least the Shield and the ATV 4K have gigE connections, and play all of my rips without buffering.

Hey guys, have you noticed that if a mkv has multiple .ass soft subtitles embedded, Xplay only direct plays the default one? All the other ones are flagged for transcoding.
Plex will play all the .ass softsubs without transcode.
Is this a known bug?
Iām using the WebOS 3.0 unfortunetly, they even removed the Spotify app aswell from it
(Which was pretty much the only app i used on the TV)
But iāve tried all the settings you can, and thereās no way to come around of transcoding SRT subtitles on 3.0
Iāve moved now to a Raspberry PI2 which i had on my non-smart TV from earlies days with LibreELEC instead. Now currently waiting for the new NVIDIA Shield which hopefully comes soon!
So Iām guessing the app is kinda broken now after not being updated in a while? Some media doesnāt play at all, itās just stuck on the loading screen.
Xplay works fine here on a LG Oled C7.
Wvkreg, which version of XPlay are you using? The lastest on WebOS?
Yes Latest webos for the LG Oled 55cv7. I think it is Webos 3.5.
I mean the Xplay version you use, is it the latest? I have not updated yet to the latest so everything I start the application the update pops up. I have read a lot of complains about the latest update that Iām not sue if I should upgradeā¦
I bought xplay 3 days ago and now he asks me back in demo ⦠help
My app has only been showing my account and no one else for awhile now. I decided to unlink/relink my account to see if this would fix it. However, once I did that the app showed ātrial version expiredā message.
I just tried sending an email to the support email (xplay@itkey.ru) and I received an undeliverable bounce back. Also, it looks like his main webpage is down as well - https://xplay.itkey.ru.
Might be time to report this guy to LG since heās no longer supporting the app we paid for.
Iām not sure what he was hoping to accomplish. He took what was working, broke it, and then abandoned his app. What a shame.
Yep, as a fellow developer Iāve found him to be less than professional. This cowardly retreat is not that surprising for someone who was obviously in over their head in trying to maintain multiple versions across multiple OSes.
Itās really too bad as I prefer his UI over that offered by the native Plex app.
@bublikoff Is there still any development in the Xplay app? I am a very happy user of the app. It is also a paid app so I expect some updates every now and then. Please let us know. A community of (paying) people are waiting for some news.
