You can easily help me

Server Version#:latest
Player Version#:
When opening Plex, the shown ip is not known to me (127.0.0.1:32400) instead of 192.168.1.139:32400
May I have the same PMS running (simultaneously)on my iMac as well as in my WD My Cloud Home?
If not, How can I change the PMS from the iMac to the WD My Cloud Home?

127.0.0.1 is localhost.
What do you mean by shown ip? In the plex settings or this is the IP you use to access the server (adress you put into the browser to access web interface)?

Exact, when I Go to the top right sign of plex , I get many options : Preferences, Open at login… and Open Plex… If I use this to Open Plex then I get this ip which is not the ip That I usually put on the browser. Is that Ok? My Plex cannot be hacked if I use this ip?

Think of it like this:

127.0.0.1 is like when you tell someone standing in front of your home, “That’s my house right there” and point your finger. It only has context when you are already at your house. Everyone who types in 127.0.0.1 gets the computer they are typing it into.

192.168.1.139 is like when you are outside of view of your house but you are still in your neighborhood (LAN). You are standing at a party and they ask where you live and you say, “Over on Baker St. Third house in from Smith Rd.” They have to have context (be inside your LAN) for it to give them any real information.

No one can do anything with either of these addresses without being on your network. If you go to https://www.whatismyip.com/ and see the IP address that shows up there, that is like giving your Mailing Address to people.

123 Sesame St.
Hollywood, CA 54321

With that, people from anywhere in the world can attempt to send you stuff and it’s important that you have the appropriate security to protect yourself.

Thanks so much to both for your help they are very helpy!
I must also say that your answer KnightCat83 is really a very didactic one and helps very much to understand the whole thing to old and and uneased people like me! A 11 over 10 for you!

I apologize for throwing out technical term without proper explanation (which KnightCat83 did nicely).
Now, for the servers… You can have two on your local network. Inside of your local network, there will not be any problem. However, both servers need to talk to the outside world and outside world needs to talk to them, and this is where it gets tricky.

You will need to forward different ports for each server.

To explain, I will take example from KnightCat83 and reverse it.
Imagine you live in a block of flats, each has a number. The adress for the outside world is
123 Sesame St.
Hollywood, CA 54321
However, in order to get mail to the Joe Smith (plex server on local network) living in the flat no. 26(machine IP), you need to advise receptionist (router) that all post for Joe Smith is to be delivered to flat no 26 (port forward).

Port forward means telling your router (internet box - gateway between your local network and the internet) that any communication coming from outside world (internet) on port xxxx (there is a range between 1 to 65535, some of them are not supposed to be used as they are required for specific services) should be handed over to specific machine in your local network, and that specific machine needs to be told to listen or that port for incoming communication.

To make things even more complicated, we need to get into how these IP adresses are being assigned in your local network. Each device that connects to the network needs to have IP adress assigned. It can be done manually in the network settings of each device, but in order to make network simpler, routers have a piece of software that takes care of assigning IP to each device on the server and telling it where to connects when it needs to reach the internet - DHCP server. Each device has its unique ID called MAC adress. Whenewer device is powered up and connected to the network, it sends out a request to find if there is a DHCP server. If there is any on the network, it will respond by sending available IP adress to the requesting machine, which sends back a confirmation that it accepts the adress assigned. DHCP server then marks the adress as in use to not offer it to another machine. In order to do this, the DHCP server has the list of ip adresses it can use and assign to clients, and time for which the ip adress is reserved.
There is our problem - when that time expires, the device is assigned new IP adress - in our example, Joe moves to another flat because his contract expired. But the receptionist (router) still forward his post to flat no 26, but Joe is not there anymore… We need to make sure that the IP adress of the machine stays the same (Joe needs to stay in same flat). There are two ways to archieve that - either you can set the IP adress manually in network properties of each device, or you need to tell router to always assign same IP to device - this is called DHCP reservation. You give router the unique Id (MAC adress) of the device and IP it should always assign to it, and it will make sure that IP of this device always stays the same.

So to sum it up, you need to actually do 3 steps:

  1. you need to make sure that the devices plex server runs on stays on the same IP adress (flat no. in our example - if Joe moves from flat 26 to 39 silently, his post will go missing) - this can be done either by setting Static IP for each machine or set up DHCP reservation on your router.
  2. forward the 2 ports on your router - lets say 32400 for iMac and 32402 for WD cloud. That mean pointing your brovser at the IP adress of your router, going to the settings and setting up which port number should be forwarded and to what local IP.
  3. going to the settings of each of the servers running on these machines - Settings in the web interface, then clicking remote access on the bar on the left, then click Show Advanced, tick Manually specify public port, and enter correct number for each server.

I do not want to discourage you from trying, just want to warn you that especially second part might be complicated… If unsure, find someone around you who can guide you. Changing wrong settings on your router may render your internet service inoperational. Again, not trying to scare you off, just having someone at your side to guide and help might be useful.

I very much appreciate your interest in helping my problem. Many thanks for that! I’ll read again all your instructions and and follow your wise advice of getting the help of an expert before making any change to my router.

Thanks again!
