You Have Too Many Active Streams Error

Hi there!
I’ve seen you answer a post pretty similar to what I’m experiencing. Whenever I try to play something on a shared library it says I have too many active streams even though I’m not streaming at all.

1st things first: playing = streaming.

The server owner can configure an option to limit the number of parallel streams allowed per user:
Settings > [Server Name] > Network > Remote streams allowed per user

So… chances are this is…

  • about you attempting to play a video from a friend’s server who has set this restriction
  • you’re attempting to stream from your own server while away from home and you set this restriction
  • you have your own server configured with this restriction and your Plex Media Server considers the playback is happening outside your home network anyway (this can e.g. happen if your home network consists of multiple subnets).

Thank you for your answer!

It’s a friends server with a restriction on 2 devices.
However I am not streaming on any device when this error pops up. I’ve tried uninstalling every Plex app I have and cleaning the cache and still nothing.

In that case the restriction is enforced on his server… so little use to uninstall anything on your end.
You can ask him if he’s seeing any activities from your clients under https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices/all

This is a common error that I get when I fast-forward or rewind, the stream gets stuck, and I refresh the page too many times. It is very is to replicate and it baffles me that they haven’t been able to fix this after all these years.
