Right under Email in the account settings it says, and I quote, Email can be updated from authentication provider. Never shown to the public.
And yet, my default username shown on the forums is my full email address with the @ and the . replaced with underscores. It would be entirely trivial to realize that fooplexuser_gmail_com has the email address fooplexuser@gmail.com.
Could you maybe either think of a better way to generate a default name, or at least prompt users at first login to update it?
You can change your preferred forum user name any time.
It’s up to you to make that choice.

Why did you use your email address as your user name in the first place?

I know that, you’ll notice I already changed it. My point is that by default a person’s email is clearly exposed through their username. This is a terrible default.
@Alucard1 I didn’t set my email as my user name. I joined the forum by signing in with my Plex email/password and my username was set to my email address (with underscores replacing illegal characters) by default.
It’s been a while since I set up my forum account but my recollection was that it did show you what your displayed ID was going to be and mentioning it could be changed.
Was that what you experienced when you set up your forum account? If so then the crux of your original post was incorrect.
I’m like 95% sure it didn’t. I’m usually fairly diligent about those things. I’ll have to make a new fake account and see. You’re right, that would make my argument rather moot.
So the answer is no, there does not appear to be any warning.
I sign up for a new account on plex.tv
Then I browse to forums.plex.tv and I’m signed in already. I go to my account page, and this is my name
There were no warnings, popups, or notifications about changing my name or what my user ID would be at all. I still hold that this is a valid complaint.
It used to a “benefit” of getting Plex Pass that got you access to the support forum in the first place but that doesn’t seem the case any more. Maybe some other things have changed.
Can a moderator confirm whether there’s currently any warning notice or warning given about what your displayed forum name will be prior to making your first post?
