1.13.8.5395 - "There was a transcoder error" - I can't record anything

That’s so frustrating, why did this get changed from the 15 second timeout?

After upgrading the first thing I tested was live TV and recording, it worked the second time around so I thought it was ok, it wasn’t till a couple of days later that I noticed all my recordings since the upgrade had failed.

If I get a chance I’ll upload logs today.

Plex Media Server 1.14.1.5487 has just been released as Beta. It has a fix for the issue of Channel tuning failures due to a 10 second timeout triggering when tuners take longer

See Release Notice

  • (DVR) Wait longer to detect duration during live TV transcoder startup (‪#9437‬)

(We are aware that even with this fix there may still be timeouts on some USB or PCIe tuners - Please ensure firmware updated to latest available. There is a need to establish if this issue of tuning needing more than 15 seconds to start is widespread - so please provide logs for any continuing tuning errors after updating to 1.14.1.5487)

I have WinTV Quad HD on pcie card and have been unable to record anything for more than a few minutes until it drops. Not sure if this is related, but here are recent logs.Plex Media Server Logs_2018-12-13_10-10-25.zip (1.1 MB)

Are you referring to the failure at 09:59 am ? livetv session started at 09:43
The failure at 09:59 is similar to ones seen before after a faulty windows update

Dec 13, 2018 09:59:45.535 [14364] ERROR - [Transcoder] [stream_segment,ssegment @ 04fb6040] Failed to open segment list 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/45842093-1a2c-4794-bfd8-fdb939ca9ec2/0c8e8311-c9db-44e0-b128-649d1dfd61f7/seglist'
Dec 13, 2018 09:59:45.540 [2036] ERROR - [Transcoder] av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error
Dec 13, 2018 09:59:45.541 [14364] ERROR - [Transcoder] Error writing trailer of media-%05d.ts: Invalid argument

It is possible that Microsoft issued a new update that is causing this
Could you establish what the OS version and build number (settings / system / about)

The last known faulty update that caused such an error was the 10th july 2018 update fixed in the 16th July update

So something similar may have happened again - check that you are up to date with all windows updates

If this problem persists, will need to capture packets on 127.0.0.1 to capture with the logs so we can see if there are any clues as to why this would fail http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/45842093-1a2c-4794-bfd8-fdb939ca9ec2/0c8e8311-c9db-44e0-b128-649d1dfd61f7/seglist

There is a good and easy to use command line tool RawCap available here https://www.netresec.com/index.ashx?page=RawCap

Download it and then start an elevated command line window (Start / run / cmd and right click and select Run As Administrator )
Then cd to the directory where you placed RawCap.exe
and run it
It will list the network interfaces
Enter the number for the 127.0.0.1 interface
Then confirm the output filename when prompted

So now it is capturing 127.0.0.1 traffic to that file

Reproduce the problem
Capture the server logs
and stop the RawCap capture by breaking in on it with control and c
Upload the Plex Media Server logs zip and send me by Private Message zip of the Rawcap pcap file produced

I am having the same issue, transcoder error when trying to record Live TV, My version is 1.15.0.647 my Tuner is HDHomerun Prime. Any suggestions. Thanks

I was too scared to do that upgrade, I saw in the release notes that they’ve tinkered again with the tuner timeout FFS.

Your only option is to downgrade to the previous version, which is most likely somewhere in your Plex folders.

Do you have a version thats working if so which version. Thanks

I’m currently on 1.14.1.5488 and it’s working just fine.

Thanks will try

Systems says Current version is 1.15.0.659 cannot downgrade to an older version.

You have to uninstall your existing version, it feels a bit scary, but it works. You uninstall and then you put the older version on, it retains all your settings.

It would be safest though to do a backup first just in case it all goes wrong.

So all the data with poster info metadata remains, When i reinstall the app again, it will have a version that can be upgraded?

Yep that has always been my experience. But as I say, make sure you’ve got a backup in case anything goes wrong.

Thanks will i’ll give it a couple days to see if Plex lords come out with an updated versions, no a emergency but an inconvenience. BTW what type of tuner are you using and are you cable or OTA.

That entry should not have been in the release notes. There is no change in timeouts between 1.14.1.5488 and 1.15.0.647 or 1.15.0.659

If there is a problem, please get logs and it will get looked at

Ok I’ll try the upgrade soon then and see it it works for me.

I’m OTA and I use a hauppauge wintv-dualhd.

Good news, it does work fine :slightly_smiling_face:
