I have some movies in 3D (Side-by-Side) that all have the same resolution: 1920 x 800.
As they are H-SBS, two “distorted” images are visible in one frame (when viewed in 2D).
That’s also how it should be for the beamer to convert the movie into 3D.
When I open ANY of these 3D movies in the File Explorer, it looks like this:
Here’s the problem:
When playing the same movie/file with PLEX (doesn’t matter if mobile/web/FireTV player),
most movies will look like this:
Somehow PLEX converts the distorted images into their “meant-to-be” format.
While the beamer thinks the images are still distorted, it does its normal conversion - which
leads to a final resolution of roughly
1920 x 400. It looks basically like a line on the screen
The weird thing is: Not all 3D movies are displayed this way in PLEX. Some still look right:
Using KODI with the PLEXKODICONNECT-Addon solves this problem, all 3D movies get displayed with the correct distortion.
But why isn’t it working directly with the PLEX players?
Just some information about the files:
- all are MKVs
- all are named like this: MOVIENAME.YEAR.H-SBS.mkv
Plex has no support for 3D video whatsoever.
Yeah, I am totally aware of that. That’s what makes me wonder why PLEX somehow “converts” the two distorted images per frame into the two normal images per frame (as shown in the post).
I just want PLEX to display the 2D (distorted, with two images next to each other) version so that the beamer can convert it - I don’t have a problem by activating the 3D mode manually.
I wonder. Does the one auto-corrected by Plex have strange details in the MediaInfo? Such as, does it have a hard-coded aspect ratio that doesn’t accurately match the video’s actual resolution? Some players will try to respect the aspect ratio flag rather than simply find it out for themself from the pixel resolution. This screwed me up when I watched an OLD avi of an old movie. The original video creator put in the wrong flag.
It’d explain why Plex might be “fixing” the video for you.
Sound interesting, but sadly there’s no such tag in the MKVs.
PLEX also recognises the aspect ratio as 2:35:1 with FHD res:

The exact resolution with this ar would be 1920 x 816 but I think that’s close enough.
