Tried this MKVToolnix - didn’t work for me. Removed all audio and subtitles except for bare necessary ones. Subtitles ON still force transcode regardless of subtitle setting.
Subtitle ON forces transcode to Video → 20Mbps - regardless of whether or not audio is transcoded.
Client - Plex for LG
Version - 5.93.2
Platform 10.2.1
Display - LG C4 (2024)
webOS25 / 10.2.1-5202 Software Version 33.22.52
The issue around subtitles started from version webOS 24 / 9.2.4-43 that updated August 2025.
Other issues with webOS 25 / 10.2.1-5202 update and Plex for LG
Frequent crashing
Remote streaming limited to 40Mbps
Subtitles force transcode (regardless of setting)
I fail to understand how the TV software update to webOS 25 has helped my user experience?
Prior to webOS24 / 9.2.4-43
Played everything, except TrueHD would not get passed through eARC.
Can’t comment on other audio formats DTS:X, Auro-3D, 9.1, or 11.1 channel audio
LG C4 will only pass through TrueHD over HDMI connected devices via eARC.
Internal webOS applications don’t allow this for some reason.
Contacted LG support to ask for that feature to be implemented as it isn’t in the profile.
Is TrueHD licensed separately? The back of the TV doesn’t specifically call out TrueHD - but does state Dolby, Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Audio, Dolby Atmos.
I don’t know why a license is required to pass through an unprocessed bitstream audio signal over eARC?
Vero-V running OSMC is very appealing.
Would be nice just to have everything just work.
I want the highest bitrate audio and video to get the most out of the equipment I purchased.
I want TrueHD, DTSMA-HD, 4K, DV, HDR10.
Dear friends i’ve same issue on my lg c5 77”, s.o. and plex app are updated to last version… the problem is more frequently witch 4k hdr and dolby vision file…
Same problem here. for months now. since an update of the webOS it started and does crash. 4k HDR content cant be played without problems anymore. The thing is, after a set amount of time even pausing and resuming the video file is basically not possible inside the plex app. Weird stuttering, buffering and then an unresponsive app. It just breaks and is unusable.
The same file on the same TV with jellyfin app - no problem! Find the error
I’m having the same problem, this is awful, even after completely resetting the TV to factory settings, and disabling all video/AI processing options within the LG TV settings, no luck. The same problem continues. After 5 - 10 minutes here it starts to throttle already, and soon enough it crashes.
I just purchased an LG C5 last week (yay black friday!) and everything was going well until I encountered this issue. I was actually pretty ready to not bother with my AppleTV anymore, WebOS seems fine for what I do, and with WebOS Plex app I actually get Atmos pass through where as that never seems to work properly via the AppleTV Plex app.
This crashing every 20-30 minutes or so on 4K HDR content is pretty dire though. Hoping there is a fix for this soon!
My C5 just got 33.22.69, I think the 75 release was for the B4/C4/G4. Anyway, the problem was happening for me with 33.22.65 but i’m about an hour into a film on Plex with the new .69 update and so far so good.
As an update for anyone here, I previously wrote that the number of subtitles was a factor, and I do believe that it remains a factor. However, I still cannot reliably play 4K content almost three months later. It has the same issue, especially with higher bitrate content, where it just invariably freezes even though it is nowhere close to my peak network capability. It’s frustrating it continues to be a problem. I don’t know if it’s a plex thing or a WebOS thing, but it’s not great for the user experience.
It’s a LG issue. They have limits as to how many subtitles can be thrown at it in the stream
As server owner / media curator, it is your responsibility to curate (remove) those subtitles you don’t need / least-capable device cannot handle.
I continue to have no issues streaming on LG at 180+ Mbps, 1 subtitle, 7.1 audio – which is all I need in my home. (I’ve tested 4 subtitles without issue)
The tool of choice here is MKVToolNix. You deselect those streams you don’t want and then remux to a new output file.
@ChuckPa
So every one of us, getting more and more, users, who have this problem, has to convert possibly hundreds of files manually? And even check before, which ones are even affected.
I really suggest a solution from Plex, as Plex has to handle my collection, like it always beautifully did. We/I use Plex, for those features, and Plex always, in time, adapted to the TVs.
Maybe choose as “set to auto” to autimatically load only the max. number of possible subtitles, with an option to choose before you start a movie/series/episode/etc.. For a first time user of an account it may choose the most used ones for Plex overall, in time it prefers the most used ones according to chosen languages for the server.
//Edit:
And in general, an update for the webOS app should probably be due again soon anyway, as it is more than six months since the last update.
