LgWebOs Plex App dies with message "App will now restart to free up more memory" streaming HDR

Server Version#: 1.40.4.8679
Player Version#:5.88.1

The real crime here is that LG has decided, in their infinite wisdom, that TV’s don’t need more than 1 Gig, sometimes even less, in RAM. Never mind that a full bit rate 4K HDR 30 second buffer will consume 450 MiB. Combine that with a slimmed down requirement for Arm Linux 380 Mib (Mostly network and Display drivers), an Amazaon Alexa natural language model of 150 MiB and whatever other bloatware they have decided to include and you might get the impression that there isn’t enough ram on the system. Class action maybe? After all it doesn’t support enough ram to actually play 4K high bitrate HDR content with an appropriate buffer size. In any case, the app needs to be modified to decrease the amount of frames that can be buffered based on the amount of total ram in the system. If LG is going to continue to be ass hats and not include enough RAM on their system, then Plex just needs to be smart enough to decrease the buffer time to what the system can support. IE, instead of having a 30 second buffer, maybe only use a 15 second buffer and pray to god that you never ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER! drop any network packets. Maybe a good route to go would be to allow the user to set an arbitrary limit on the buffer size in the app so that it doesn’t consume too much ram on the TV, then the user could fine tune the limit to whatever TV they have or even use it for debugging purposes.

I’d like to note that there are dozens of other threads just like this one which get closed because of the auto close feature, is there a way that we can force this one to stay open and track it as a bug?

The is seems like it could be really low hanging fruit for Plex to fix… probably an xml file somewhere. Can I get access to just fix this myself?

Posting so that the thread doesn’t die.

Posting here… again… to ensure the post doesn’t die.

Keeping it alive..

I just bought a new LG G5 and Plex started to restart itself randomly, even in SDR content. On HDR content its getting very slow, clearly there’s a memory leak or smth because at times it takes 5+ seconds for the menu to respond. I tried everything from factory reset on the TV, reinstalling the app, uninstalling ALL apps on TV except Plex, adding a USB stick etc… can’t find a way to fix this issue.
A noteworthy mention is that I never had this issue on my LG B7 and C2 units.

The LG G5 is running WebOS 10.1.0 btw and latest client/server Plex versions.

I have the same issue with high bittate videos on lg c5. Very annoying, sometimes better watch with kodi

As a work around, you can set the resolution to a lower level. It’s just VERY annoying and if someone who isn’t technical is watching a stream, they aren’t going to know how to do that. It’s still a bug that needs to be fixed. I just wish that I could access to the code to fix it for them.

I tried setting resolution to a lower level but it doesn’t help. There’s certain media type where the LG just start to bleed memory from all holes and lags, stutters and restarts randomly… I just hope this gets fixed with a patch or something because its super annoying…

Hello
I have the same problem on my LG G5 when watching a video.

tried multiple things but it is still not working. put on a video, 10-15 seconds of playing crash. i can watch on plex app on windows, different systems only on the lg tv it crashes. so i think there is an issue with the app.

Have you tried setting a lower bit rate/resolution in the client settings for plex on the LG tv? It’s not a fix, but it has been a work around for me.

Have the same issue on a brand new LG G5 83” . App is now restarting to free up memory”

App version 5.93.1
Platform version 10.2.0

@ChuckPa is there anyone from the Plex team that might can assist us with this issue ?

I tried Netflix and YouTube app for several hours, no restart of the app.

The restart only happends with Plex and when I check the App Store I have over 5.1GB available .

What can I do to assist?

Its a really annoying issue :slight_smile:

Thanks

@Morphy

I fired up my C1., Did the required WebOS updates and all the apps :roll_eyes:

I played 2001: (ripped from the disk) and am now playing another 100+ Mbps movie to throw lots of data at it. Nothing so far.

What do I need to do to test ? (I’m not seeing any real “Steps to reproduce” in the discussion above.

@ChuckPa

Well your C1 dont run the latest webos? Im wondering if the webos is causing this? Or if it is the plex app?

Seems that new models with webos10 is having issues with plex . I just got this new tv from LG G5 , and I can relate to the problem the other users are seeing.

I also had an older LG W8 worked flawlessly. Never crashed and restarted. This is the first time ive seen this on a TV. Been plex user for a decade now and never encountered this issue before.

Can you maybe escalate the “issue” to the Smart TV team for LG , or something? :smiley:

At the moment im trying to run plex untill its restarting again. Loggins are enable on tv and on the server. I just need to know to whom I can send the logs to.

I normally use my Apple TV 4K, but do have the app set up on my LG 65OLED G4, my Mother has the same TV with Plex installed and both are working as expected.

Both TV’s are set on Auto updates WebOS 9.2.3

I would be concerned there may not be any assistance in the short term due to plans of updates to WEBOS 24 and 25

After reading through this discussion again has anyone tried Resetting the TV to Defaults?

Can they have something to do with the restarts?

@ChuckPa

I have some logs if that could help . It has crashed two times within 2 hours .
