LG webOS Plex 3.60.1 Buffering Problem

Last night my LG Smart TV install a new version of Plex, 3.60.1 in this case.

I don´t care the change in design, fonts, functions or something else (pretty), i´m worried about the functioning.

I have my own Plex Sever and i use so many devices to play it… two Raspberry Pi, mobile phones, PS4, XBOne even my old version of plex in Smart TV (i dont remember the number) without problems, so fluid.

Now, in the same device (Smart TV) with the same Server, the same configuration, wires and everything the data flow slowed down. Is buffering very often, 1 or 2 minutes, and its exhausting to use it.

I see the configuration menu to search how increase the memory buffer to prevent this problem but i dont find it… i dont know how to solve it.

Can you give me a helping hand, please?

What types of files are leading to buffering? 720p, 1080p 4k, etc.
How is the file being played (Direct play, direct stream, transcoded, etc), Plex Web or the logs should inform you.
Logs from PMS would be very helpful.

Normally we use 1080p files in direct play, no problems with the same files yesterday.

I find the logs of PMS but are a lot of file with a lot of information… which one can be useful?

Thx

Happening for me too using a 1080p 10bit HEVC file (2773 kbps) direct play with subtitles (can’t believe its direct playing with subtitles - THANK YOU!). Only thing I’ve played so far. Playback actually continues smoothly whilst “buffering” appears on the display. Buffering only appears for a second or less and then disappears - happened maybe a couple of time over an hour. Its not my connection as I could comfortably stream 80GB 4K files on the V1 app.

Otherwise great update. Thanks

Its much more frequent in my player (every 5 or 10 minutes) and the buffering pause lasts about 10 seconds. I dont have problems transfering files till today and, the problem is only in my Smart TV (the other players works ok) and with this new version (the older one works great too)

Some problem after update for 4k movies on LG (webOS 3,5).
Before everything work fine.

Same for me despite I had to restart my whole TV after these buffering breaks like 3 times during a 2h movie. Also the buffering overlay that pops up every few minutes for half a second really is annoying.

Hopefully it’ll get fixed before I can enjoy my lazy weekend

Same issue for me. Plex worked fine with direct play of all items even high bitrate 4k since I got the TV.

New update installed today and I get buffering all the time.

For some reason even though I have my settings set to play LOCAL files at original quality, it started playing an episode at 720p 4mbps. I can successfully select original quality and it then switches to direct stream video, transcode audio (previously it was just direct stream both)

It’s buffering roughly every 2 minutes for 10 seconds.

My server is more than capable of transcoding even 4k files so it should have no problems with this low bitrate 1080p file.

Same and same. Buffering is more sporadic for me, but have to re-select Original quality each time.

A while back I made the change to the web-os-html.xml (or whatever it was) file on PMS to get HDR working properly, wondering if that has something to do with the quality selecting incorrectly.

I’ve got the same problem with 4k movies buffering every 30 seconds or so. It worked perfectly fine before the latest version of the LG plex app.
Tried the same movies in xplay on the same TV and no buffering there, so most likely related to the new LG Plex app version.

Same problem here, buffering screens appears for 1 sec every 10 minutes since the last update. Really annoying.

I have also encountered this problem.

When streaming relativity low bit-rate x264 files form a local server I encountered the buffering window that appears intermittently every 5 minutes.

Never had a problem with the old client.

I don’t mind the new layout, but the interface is slow and sluggish

I have the same problems. I seem to have got round the playing in lower quality issue by changing the remote playback (!?!) option to original. After doing that, it plays back at the original quality. 4K though, there’s no hope. All of them are buffering every 30 seconds or so

I have found a workaround the buffering issue. When a movie has more than 2 audio streams, if the second one is selected then the movie is transcoded. In my case trancode a 4k movie is not possible with the actual server I have so buffering and stuttering occurs. It doesn’t matter what type the audio is. If you select the first audio everything works fine. The only thing I have noticed is that watching an 1080p movie from time to time a buffering icon was appearing some a fraction of second and then disappears. I didn’t experience any other buffering issues.

That’s not the issue for me unfortunately. All of my files have only one audio stream and the 4K ones are still buffering

Yes, buffering problems which are not related to network or server performance. It worked fine before the webos update.

If a library contains an item in a playlist, then the playlist appears in “Recent Playlists” for that library…I haven’t found a more intuitive way to just view all your playlists, but I guess this is workable at least.

The new UI with the scrolling at the top seems to get crowded if you have many libraries, but maybe I’ll get over that.

Can we PLEASE rollback or something? Basically what was working perfectly prior to the webos update is now completely unwatchable because of buffering issues, which seems to occur on videos fairly independent of bitrate. Something is broken.

EDIT: I’ve turned off direct streaming and allowed only direct play. Tried a few videos and this seems to fix the buffering issue for me. Can anyone else able to use direct play mode please try this (turn off direct streaming in settings on the TV) and confirm? Hopefully this will narrow down the issue a bit…

Ok, markt1969, i try your suggestion with a couple of videos and sounds good for me too. No buffering problem at the moment. I will try with diferent types and give you a final answer.

THX men

Is anyone using Tautulli (or PlexPy as it used to be known). If so, when playing a file that buffers, what figure does it show as the required bandwidth?

Markus, this is a problem with ALL Roku devices also. I have another thread open on it. I also have a friend with an LG TV, and yup’ he has constant buffering. The best anyone can figure out is that it started about two weeks ago. The connection is being reset by the peer (small sample log).

I have the same problem here: Every now and then I see the buffering dialog for a fraction of second.

What weighs much more is that the server transcodes where it does not have and did not before. My setup is a bit special since I use a Sonos Playbar which does not play DTS but DD5.1. Even though the media should be directly playable (H.264 and DD5.1) it gets transcoded (H.264 -> H.264 and AC3 to AAC).

I don’t get it: As much as I’m a fan of Plex they always ■■■■ up the direct stream and play thing on every platform with every release.
