4K HDR movie playback broken on 2020 Samsung TV

Any update to this. My roku plays hdr from Plex just fine but my Samsung does not. Clicking into it only says uhd.

I’m having no issues on my device trying to play transcoded 7.1 audio with HDR video. The TV reports HDR just fine and plays the audio without issue. Can someone provide me with a 2-3 minute sample clip that they’re having issues with? (Please confirm that the sample clip itself is also having the issue before sending it my way)

did some testing and I believe the Plex Samsung TV app is displaying HDR just fine? Dolby Vision to be exact based on the color settings.

I launched the Plex TV Samsung App and played the same movie, thought INFO shows something different:

But when i go into the picture settings i saw that it changed to st.2084 which i believe is dolby vision?

If that is the case then I believe the Samsung Plex App is indeed playing HDR content properly

this is what the apple tv 4k displays though

Here is the APPLE TV 4k directly plugged into the HDMI 2 of my Samsung, pressing info you can see UHD and HDR

Samsung don’t make Dolby Vision TVs

but isnt that setting st 2084 indicating that its HDR? When i use my Appletv through my rx (which does not support HDR) I only get Gamma 2.2 and bt 1886.

When I use the samsung plex app i get gamma st 2084

You would have been getting HDR10 not Dolby Vision because Samsung don’t make any TVs that are Dolby Vision

Gotcha, but it shows that the samsung plex app is infact passing HDR through to the TV as im getting an HDR gamma setting?

You’re correct that ST 2084 is an HDR gamma thing (PQ or Transfer Function or Curve).

ST 2084 is also used by normal HDR10.

Some Dolby Vision Profiles use ST 2084, but others do not.

Any update on the original question (Playback with direct play for all my 4K HDR movies is broken on the new Samsung client)? I just noticed this on my Q80T as well amd it is extremely annoying; the same movies work fine on my Sony and Vizio.

Chiming in with the same issue. I have 3 movie rips that are 4k hdr with 7.1. one plays on my Q80T without any issues, the other two can play for about 15 minutes before the screen either freezes or turns into a glitchy mess.

For the two that are broken, setting the audio to 5.1 fixes it as others have said. But the other file plays when set to 7.1 without any issues.

For me no 4k material even starts. Unexpected playback problem. On my Mi box S 4k connected to same TVit is no problem.

I posted a few times about these issues including earlier in this thread. I love Plex. I couldn’t use 4K hdr content at all. It really sucked. Then not playing Netflix stuff was another issue. I loved the tv but those are two major sources of what we watch.

I returned the top end qled Samsung tv and for the same price bought the song oled 77 a80j. Oh my it is bright and the colors and contrast are amazing and best of all absolutely 0 issues with plex or Netflix. All Dolby all plex 4K hdr play beautifully. I honestly don’t think it’s a plex issue but a Samsung making it difficult to work with them ecosystem by also not allowing Dolby vision. Netflix looked so bad in comparison to the Sony oled.

If you are within the return window try it. You won’t regret it and all these issues with Samsung TVs not just with plex but Netflix will be in the past.

If it complains about tone mapping, try disabling subtitles.

Disappointing to see this is not fixed and has been an issue for quite some time. Just got myself a Q90T and its exhibiting this on some but not all content. When looking at the dashboard its trying to convert eac3 to aac with direct play video but just eternally buffers or i get very odd picture breakup. Is there any proper solution to this at all?
