4k still sucks on xbox one -- can you please fix it

There’s definite improvement here. I’m on the skip ahead build of xbox os. Not sure if MS have made any adjustments to the fix since they deployed it to

I started by testing out my copy of The Dark Knight:

  • Video Resolution 4K

  • Duration 2:44:32

  • Bitrate 60655 kbps

  • Width 3840

  • Height 2160

  • Aspect Ratio 1.78

  • Container MKV

  • Video Frame Rate 24p

  • Audio Profile ma

  • Video Profile main 10

  • Duration 2:44:32

  • File The Dark Knight Rises (2012) Remux-2160p.mkv

  • Size 69.71 GB

  • Audio Profile ma

  • Container MKV

  • Video Profile main 10

  • Codec HEVC

  • Bitrate 59119 kbps

  • Bit Depth 10

  • Chroma Subsampling 4:2:0

  • Color Primaries bt2020

  • Color Range tv

  • Color Space bt2020nc

  • Color Trc smpte2084

  • Frame Rate 23.976 fps

  • Height 2160

  • Level 5.1

  • Profile main 10

  • Ref Frames 1

  • Width 3840

  • Display Title 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR)

  • Codec DCA

  • Channels 6

  • Bitrate 1536 kbps

  • Language English

  • Bit Depth 24

  • Profile ma

  • Sampling Rate 48000 Hz

  • Title DTS-HD MA 5.1

  • Display Title English (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

I got about 10-15 minutes through with no issues apart from some frameskips. This is frustrating but I get this on 720p and 1080p content as well.

Then I watched Star Wars The Last Jedi:

  • Video Resolution 4K

  • Duration 2:31:51

  • Bitrate 50841 kbps

  • Width 3840

  • Height 2160

  • Aspect Ratio 1.78

  • Channels 8

  • Language English

  • Audio Channel Layout 7.1

  • Bit Depth 24

  • Sampling Rate 48000 Hz

  • Title Dolby Atmos/TrueHD Audio / 7.1-Atmos / 48 kHz / 4581 kbps / 24-bit

  • Display Title English (TRUEHD 7.1)

Watched this all the way through. A few frameskips but otherwise good. Then I tried a few other files and no matter which one I tried the Xbox was transcoding to 480p. I tested out the Star Wars movie I’d just watched and sure enough it was being transcoded too. I quite the Plex app and when I started it up again it seemed to be working ok. I’m now watching Jurassic Park III which is the highest bitrate 4K movie I own:

  • Video Resolution 4K

  • Duration 1:32:20

  • Bitrate 79194 kbps

  • Width 3840

  • Height 2160

  • Aspect Ratio 1.78

  • Container MKV

  • Video Frame Rate 24p

  • Audio Profile ma

  • Video Profile main 10

  • Duration 1:32:20

  • File Jurassic Park III (2001) Remux-2160p.mkv

  • Size 51.08 GB

  • Audio Profile ma

  • Container MKV

  • Video Profile main 10

  • Codec HEVC

  • Bitrate 77466 kbps

  • Bit Depth 10

  • Chroma Subsampling 4:2:0

  • Color Primaries bt2020

  • Color Range tv

  • Color Space bt2020nc

  • Color Trc smpte2084

  • Frame Rate 23.976 fps

  • Height 2160

  • Level 5.1

  • Profile main 10

  • Ref Frames 1

  • Width 3840

  • Display Title 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR)

  • Codec DCA

  • Channels 8

  • Bitrate 1536 kbps

  • Language English

  • Audio Channel Layout 7.1

  • Bit Depth 24

  • Profile ma

  • Sampling Rate 48000 Hz

  • Title DTS:X 7.1

  • Display Title English (DTS-HD MA 7.1)

I’m halfway in and seems to be working fine.

I’ll report back if I have the transcoding issue again. Hoping it was just an anomaly.
