Does anyone have any suggestions for a 4K TV that would work well with plex, ideally one that has a plex app available within the TV, not an external box.
Pricewise it needs to be less than 1000 GBP
At the moment I am looking at a Sony Bravia KD55XD8005
Which I think is an Android based TV
Anyone got one or have other suggestions.
fwiw, Yeah an LG OLED would be nice but that’s out of my budget
Thanks
Thanks, I had seen that page. But clicking on the link for Sony TV’s it only seems to list up to 2014 models and I don’t see that model listed there
Personally I think that you are better off not relying on a Plex client built into the TV as the manufacturers have a dire track record when it comes to updating & maintaining the smart features of their smart TVs. If you are spending £1000 on a TV then set aside £60-100 for a decent network streaming device that will be kept up to date by the manufacturer e.g… Amazon Fire TV 4K or Roku Ultra.
Sony Bravia KD55XD8005 is a lovely set. Does retail at 800…
You might as well go for the 85…bit more of a bargain as it’s £1300 retail normally as I think it has the better x1 processor and better colour mapping… £999 in black (1099 in silver for some reason)
Also get the 5 year warrenty…
If you know anyone that works for JL/Waitrose you can get 12.5% off too
I just bought a LG 65 B6 OLED - Fricking stunning screen!
there are some thoughts on the matter…
one, an external box will almost always have more power than what is built in…
2: if you want premium sound, its almost always better to run the client to the amp/tuner then to the tv… and not pass it out the tv…
3: you will want to keep that multi thousand dollar investmnet on the wall longer than the “built in smart” circutry will be tech relevant for… IE it will become slow and dumb in short order
4: if the manufacturer wants to put limits on what the app can do, or pull it completely… they can… I have seen samsung smart TVs that would only allow plex content from the local network… so no hooking into a remote plex server or cloud storage… etc…
5: the more complex the tv… the more stuff to break… a dumb tv will last longer … generally…
6: MUCH cheaper for both the initial investment and long term ownership costs
I would spend the extra money to get a set with a better pannel, with smother playback than a cheap panel with smart features… any day and twice on sunday…
Yeah, ignore the “smarts” of “smart” TVs… they are underpowered and quick to be EOLed. Cut your losses and drop the extra $60-80 on something like a Roku which will work tons better and still be supported a year from now. It also future-proofs your TV itself since you aren’t depending on the TV for apps too.
