8.16.0 Sluggish and laggy UI - On Sony A8H / XH 95 OLED & Philips 805 OLED

Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: 8.16.0.24423 (04921805)

Hi, I’ve been very pleased with plex on my Sony A8H but now after 8.16.0 it is suddenly very sluggish to navigate. It’s nothing system wide because all other apps/system is fine.

Tried rebooting, forcing all other apps, clearing cache, rebuilding the cache… etc. Nothing seems to work. Somehow I’m thinking this whole local caching thing has something to do with it… but it’s just my gut feeling. Will try a complete reinstall later. Could you make that a setting maybe that can be enabled/disabled?

Yeah. Tried everything. Uninstalling and re-installing etc. Nothing works.

Edit: I threw this version out and sideloaded 8.15 which works perfectly.

Also noticed that this bug effects the entire UI, including the settings, something is borked in 8.16 for Sony OLED Android TVs

Please fix this Plex team.

Same thing happening here. Suddenly sluggish and I also cant play 4k without getting warning of slow connection. Apple tv, with same cable and plex app, works without a problem.

Ok, never tried any 4K content before uninstalling 8.16 and downgrading vi sideload…since UI was unusable.

@marekszulik can you guys reproduce? do you need anything to fix this? feels kind of %##! to have a plex pass these days.

Same here on my Philips 65OLED805 TV, the UI is veeeeery sluggish since 8.16…

I have a Sony Android TV myself, and will try to reproduce this today

I’ve noticed the same thing on my Sony tv

Any luck?

I can reproduce, but need to try and go back a few versions to see when it started

Cheers, I left the 8.16 versions… but I might have been overzealous :smirk:

So, I found 8.16 to be a bit laggy, so I uninstalled and went back to 8.14.1, then 8.15.2, then 8.16, then 8.17, and all of them seemed to work fine
I had to uninstall the app to downgrade, so I wonder if something was misconfigured or in a bad state or something

Curious!

I have a Sony XH950 and can also reproduce the problem.

I’ll try uninstall / reinstall a little later and will report back, however if that does resolve the issue, it begs the question… Why?

EDIT: How did you get and install an earlier version? I presume if I go straight to the Play Store I’ll just get the current version?.. Although perhaps I won’t need to downgrade to fix the issue?.. Questions, questions! lol

You can download old versions from the release notes:

Be curious to see if an uninstall and reinstall with the current version fixes it for you though.

I’ll go straight for this shortly to answer just that… :+1:

Clear cache > Clear Data > Uninstall > Reboot > Reinstall direct to 8.16.0.24423 and the lag still seems to be there.

Yeah I also did all of that, problem was still there. Will try to upgrade my 8.15 to see if that somehow works better than a fresh install of 8.16 (…seems like that would be very weird though)

Looks like in new versions 8.16, 8.17 changed home screen design, with creating background blur color for each selected item posters, and maybe this new feature slow down app.
In 8.15 version always displayed grey background.

Also in 8.16 when start play any video I see black/white full screen lines before displaying loading screen.

I didn’t see any real difference in performance from that change on my 2016 Sony Android TV. The lines thing I have no idea on, I’m afraid :psyduck_confusion: Can you provide a video of what you’re seeing, and logs from the client? :plexheart:

Hey @DaveBinM , I sent a DM w/ video showing the lag and a log.
