So if I have a collection and I want the collection’s movies to remain in a certain order, how do I do that? I tried adding things to my collection and changing the sort method to ‘custom’ but you can’t actually tell what this does it doesn’t give you an option to drag and drop anything anywhere and you can’t drag and drop on the edit collection page; so it sorts but by what? I assumed it would mean that things I added would simply remain in the order I added them but that wasn’t the case either. How do I use the custom sort?
Also, it took me awhile to figure out how to edit a collection, I added one easily enough but editing it took awhile to find. I finally found it via the search bar … there should be some additional functionality added to each movie that is within a collection to have a link to ‘edit’ the collection directly from the movie (a link to the edit collection, I’m not talking about adding anything fancier).
For the 3 button dropdowns:
The drop downs should all be in sync; it’s super annoying to search for something using the search bar and have the 3 dot drop drop down options be different than the options when you click into the item and hit the 3 dot dropdown.
For instance, search for something using the search and try to add it to a collection directly from the search, you can’t. Try to unmatch or match an item, you can’t; the drop down is missing things that someone might want to use right there and you can find all this all over the place.
Go to a playlist and click on the 3 dot drop down there, no collection option.
They should make the menu a reusable component so each menu is the same throughout the site for the selected item.
For playlists:
Also, another thing I found, if you have at least 2 playlists and you delete 1, the 3 dot menu may contain 2 playlists with the first playlists label; a quick refresh makes this go away, but it was something I noticed and I’m not sure what would have happened had I clicked the one that was actually deleted; would it do nothing; would it try to add that entry to a deleted playlist? I’m not sure.
There’s a number of posts about the “custom” order. That option appears to have slipped into the regular client from some ongoing development – however that’s just the dropdown option, not the actual functionality to do a custom sort. Plex have stated they’re currently working on this, however there’s no ETA for when it’s going to arrive.
Editing collection from within one of its items
You cannot do that. Simply switch to the Collection tab of that library to see and edit all collections. While you can also find collections using the search and start editing them from there… that’s not really necessary.
Context menu content (3-dot dropdowns)
The options will depend on what items you’re trying to edit. Not all item types have the same options and not all options make sense in every context.
That being said… when following up on your post, I also noticed that the context menu on the search results is particularly limited – need to check if there’s a reason for that or if it’s a bug.

I do not have a collections tab? Just my library items, playlists, .. then the plex options for live tv, movies and shows and web shows, no collections. The only place I can find it is from running a search for the collection name and then I can click it from there, but i can’t find it anywhere else.

yeah, something should present a different menu, and that’s fine, but menu for a movie should present the same options everywhere and the options for a tv show should present the same options everywhere, but right now somethings don’t appear in one menu that appear in another.
re/ collections tab:
I’m referring to the header sections you should be seeing in Plex Web when you open a particular library. The screenshot is showing a library called “Cinema” on a server called “media box” with the 3 tabs Recommended, Library and Collections.
As for Juice’s point… yes, you’ll have to edit the items and manually set a Sort Title for them.
